Today- February 14

February 14 is a very special day. Today we celebrate ‘National Organ Day’ and ‘Valentine’s Day’. This celebration is about life and love. On one hand, we are celebrating life through National Donor

Day. And on the other hand, we celebrate love through Valentine’s Day. Finally, on February 14 you can celebrate both by saving someone’s life and receiving their love.

National Donor Day

This auspicious day marks the celebration of life. National Donor Day raises awareness. Moreover, educate people about the importance of organ donation. This day focuses on the donation of organs like eyes, blood, tissues, marrow, and platelets. According to Donor Alliance, one donor can save up to eight lives through organ donations. Furthermore, save and heal more than 75 lives through eye and tissue donations.

Dr. Joseph E. Murray did the first successful organ transplant between two identical twins in 1954. A South African surgeon, Dr. Christian Bernard did the first successful heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. It was done in 1967 making Dr. Bernard an international hero.

How to Celebrate

First and foremost, start talking about organ donation. Use your social media accounts for spreading awareness about this. Moreover, you can simply start by donating blood. You can register yourself as a donor in your country. With this step, you can save so many lives at once.

Valentine’s Day

Celebrated every year on February 14 is the day of love, Valentine’s Day. People also know it as St. Valentine’s day after St. Valentine. Also, it is a day of expressing love for your friends and family through various gestures. People give each other flowers, cards, and gifts to show much love they have for them. History

The history of Valentine’s day goes back to Roman times. Though the origin of the holiday is vague to date, it came to be known as the day of romance in the 14th century. There are many legends regarding Valentine’s day. Some say that it honors the priest who died around 270 CE. Another legend says that it was St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, whom the holiday is named after. Although there is a possibility that both the saints can be the same person. There is another legend that says that St. Valentine used to secretly marry couples to spare husbands from war. He defied the king’s orders in doing so and was martyred. Hence this is the reason why his feast is associated with the day of love.

How to celebrate

There are so many ways to celebrate Valentine’s day. The best gift you can give to your special someone is your time. You can go on a romantic dinner. Or cook a special meal at home. Moreover, gift them flowers, cards, and gifts. Dress up, even if you are celebrating your day at home. This will make you special. And ladies, if you were not able to wear THAT special dress that you saved for this day, this is your chance. On the other hand, all the singles out there, love yourself on this day. Go on a long drive, pamper yourself with a spa or bubble and enjoy.
