For all the baseball fans out there, today is a very important day in the history of baseball. On February 22, 1860, the first baseball game was organized. The players were San Francisco Eagles and San Francisco Red Rovers. Though the Eagles won the game. Red Rovers accused them of unfair pitching. However, baseball soon became the favorite sport of many. Moreover, Baseball became popular in the military. The officers and soldiers played with each other putting aside their ranks.
1888: Demonstration of golf
On February 22, the Demonstration of golf was shown for the first time on a Yonkers cow pasture. It was shown by Scot John Reid, “Father of American Golf”. Sonja Henie was a Norwegian figure skater. She was a three-time Olympic Champion and ten times World Champion in figure skating. On February 22, 1936, she became World Champion for the tenth time. She won a gold medal in Paris France. Adding to this victory, she also won the Olympic gold medal for the third time, in the same year. She also won the European championship for the sixth time in 1936. Henie was the only figure skater who has Olympic and World titles than any other figure skater. She later became an actress. 1979: Saint Lucia gained independence from Britain
Saint Lucia is an island country in the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea. The French and the British governments colonized it in the 17 century. Britishers had their headquarters in Barbados and the French had theirs in Martinique. In colonial rule, the slave-based sugar industry developed. In 1814, the French government left Saint Lucia and Britishers were the sole rulers. Until 1979 when it gained independence from British rule on February 22. Sir John Compton of the United Workers Party (UWP) became the first prime minister.

On February 22, 1980, one of the biggest upsets happened in Olympic History. The US ice hockey team won the game by 4-3 at Lake Placid against the Soviet Union. This game became legendary because the Soviet Union was highly favored and the American was inexperienced. This game is remembered as the “miracle on ice”. The team was coached by Herb Brooks.
