As much as she likes the city of Paris, the city does not treat her well. Her colleagues are not so happy with her American perspective and way of thinking. She faces communication problems as French people get annoyed when she speaks English. Despite the challenges, she never fails to be a perfect social media influencer and keeps her followers updated about whether she is having Chocolat au pain or dinner with friends.
About the director
Darren Star is the writer, director, and producer of ‘Emily in Paris’. He is also the creator of ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’, ‘Younger’ and other famous shows. He is well known for creating strong and expressive female characters in his movies and shows. As a kid, Star was a bit French geek and was crazy about living and working in Paris. He loved the city and its culture so much that he would go there as often as he could. So, the genesis of the show somehow developed from his experiences. He also rented an apartment there to get a feel of the character. Hence, he took ‘Emily in Paris’ as an opportunity to share his experience and express his love for Paris.
Why was Emily tres excited to be in Paris?
Emily is a very amiable person living a very satisfied and happy life in Chicago with her lover Dough. Her company where she worked as a marketing executive buys a French luxury marketing company. The opportunity comes to her when her boss, who was initially getting transferred, is not able to go due to an unexpected pregnancy.
When Emily goes to Paris, she gets very much impressed by her apartment, its location, and the fascinating architecture. But it does not take much time for her to realize that she is not that of a good fit in the city. Her colleagues at the office mock her all the time and do not accept her. She is not able to manage her long-distance relationship with Dough and breaks up with him. Also, the only guy she falls for in Paris, Gabriel, is already in a relationship that leaves her alone. As she loses her hope for a happening life in Paris, she does not give up her can-do attitude. She simultaneously befriends a Chinese baby-sitter Mindy Chen, who shows her around the city. Emily goes on a trip to her friend’s villa and enjoys a tour of her family wine business. Not to mention, this friend of Emily is none other than Gabriel’s girlfriend.
Coming back to the workplace, she ruins the meeting of Sylvie (her boss) with a very renowned designer Pierre Cadault, marketing of whose products is great hope to revive their vulnerable company. Even though she makes up for it, later on, the latter denies doing his fashion show because of a mishap. As Emily was walking on the stage wearing one of Cadault’s dresses, someone splashes paint at her. The news gets spread everywhere and Cadault was very embarrassed after the incident so he denied doing his next fashion show, Sylvie blames Emily for shaking his confidence and fires him
.
How did things take an exciting turn?
Despite being fired from the company, Emily still goes to her office because funnily any employee can officially be fired only when the paperwork for the same is complete. As Mathieu and Emily are enjoying the city of Paris, Pierre Cadault calls her and asks her to arrange for a venue for his fashion show. In the urgency to find a new venue, Pierre organizes his fashion outside his former venue and shows his new look dress collection, which is loved by everyone. To celebrate this victory, Emily decides to invite everyone for dinner at Gabriel’s restaurant.
Characters
Emily
Emily is the protagonist. Lily Collins plays the role of Emily. She is a very likable character amongst all the characters. Not to mention, she is a feminist and likes to put up questions for what she thinks is wrong. She has amazing fashion choices and desires to be famous as a social media influencer. However, she faces a lot of problems because of the change in the country and people but still tries to cope up with challenges by learning French and trying her best to socialize with her co-workers.
Gabriel
Lucas Bravo plays the role Gabriel in the show. Gabriel is the one who stays in Emily’s apartment and gives us the boy next door vibe. He is initially really sweet and helpful to Emily. But he is not that honest with her and is an indecisive person. Additionally, he is fickle-minded and is not able to make up his mind about his love life or career. He is charming and chivalrous.
Sylvie
Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu stars as Sylvie. Sylvie is Emily’s boss. She is not a big fan of Emily and always tries to avoid her. She deliberately misses telling Emily about the meetings in her office. Also, she gets very annoyed as Emily cannot speak in French. She always undermines Emily and her ideas, sometimes because of her American culture. She is mean, petty but smart.
Mindy
Ashley Park stars as Mindy Chen in the show. Mindy Chen is the first friend that Emily makes in Paris. She comes from China to stay away from her rich but oppressive parents who wanted her to get married and settled. On the contrary, she wants to be independent and thus, works as a nanny which helps her fulfill her aspirations to lead a lifestyle. Unlike all other characters in the show, she is the only one who is nice to Emily and tells her everything about France and its people. She is kind, honest, fun, and encourages Emily to not lose hope.
Why Emily + Paris = <3?
The show offers everything that a person might want from travel to fashion to comedy to feminism and romance. As much as people might perceive the show as cliché or unrealistic, it adds a tinge of modernization. As a social media influencer, Emily changes some traditional thoughts and nuances of Sylvie and other co-workers. You will surely enjoy watching the show with its great storyline and character. The Netflix show is an escape into the french culture depicting a wonderful American twist!
