Let us read onto some of the milestones in history today

1847 – Werner von Siemens founds Siemens AG & Halske

Ernst Werner Siemens was a German inventor, electrical engineer, and industrialist. He has several patents under his name. Siemens is also the SI unit of electrical inductance named after him. He invented the telegraph which used a needle instead of using morse code. Based on this invention he founded his company on October 1 in 1847. His brothers represented his company in different countries which led to its recognition. The company was named Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske and later reorganized as Siemens & Halske AG.

 

 

 1847 – Maria Mitchell becomes the first woman to discover a comet

Maria Mitchell was an American astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and educator. On this day in 1847, she discovered a comet called 1847 VI which was later named after her in her honor as ‘Miss Mitchell’s Comet’.  She was awarded a gold medal for her discovery by the King of Denmark. On the very same day, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts.

1868 “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott is published in America

Little Women is an internationally famous novel written by American author Louisa May Alcott. The novel was first published on October 1 in 1868 in America by Roberts Brothers of Boston.  The storyline is based on the life journey of four sisters from their childhood to womanhood. The book is loosely connected to the author’s life along with her three sisters’ by many scholars. The novel was the first volume and highlighted the issues a woman faces in a male-dominated society and has three major backdrops- domesticity, work, and true love. Little Women received great critical and commercial success across the globe. Later movies and many adaptations were also made on the same.

 

1908 – Henry Ford introduces the Model T car

The Ford Model T also known as the ‘Tin Lizzie’ was an automobile. It was introduced in the market for sale by the Ford Company on this day in 1908. Regarded as the first affordable automobile which enabled middle-class Americans to buy and travel in a car. The low prices were possible due to Ford’s assembly line production instead of  produced individually which enabled efficient fabrication and saved the cost of production and time. The cost of Model T was $825 and sales were so huge that it was remarked as a revolutionary and most influential car. With 16.5 million models sold, it was the car of the masses which created an evolution in automobile production. Moreover, it became the “Car of the Century” in the 20th century.

  1949 – Mao Zedong establishes the People’s Republic of China.

Mao Zedong was a communist revolutionary who proclaimed the existence of the People’s Republic of China and named himself as the head of the state. The battle of Mao against Nationalist Chinese leader Chiang Kai-Shek supported by the American government resulted in this proclamation. It was a great blow for the United States to lose China, the largest nation of Asia to communism.

 1971- First CT or CAT brain scan is performed

CT Scan also is known as a Computed Tomography scan is a medical imaging process. It uses computer-processed combinations of X-Ray measurements taken from different angles to produce a tomographic image. CT scanning is used to create 3D images of human organs. It was first performed on this day at the Atkinson Morley Hospital in Wimbledon, London by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield and Dr. Jamie Ambrose. It has been extremely useful in the medical field to detect tumors, hemorrhages, etc even today.
