Winter is here, Christmas seems so close. This is a month of joy and merriment. As we brace ourselves for yet another new year and new resolutions, we must remember that the COVID 19 is still not over. We must all stay safe and healthy. But that’s not all we’re here to talk about. Today, December 12 we have the much-awaited International Day of Neutrality. So let us all put on our reading hats and know about this day and its celebrations.
International Day of Neutrality
Battle and Wars have led to nothing but losses in totality. Yes, we could say that the winning side did see a victory, but at a great cost. Neutrality refers to a party refraining from taking part in any side of the war. This is in the literal sense. Nowadays neutrality simply refers to not having any opinion or side in a dispute.
The United Nations recognizes International Day of Neutrality for three main reasons:-
- Preventive Diplomacy
- Mediation
- Peace-Making
The General Assembly recognized these points so as to avoid any future wars. In political terms, there is always a chance of a dispute turning out to be a heated argument. We obviously do not want any more wars after World War I and II. Therefore it is important for all the member states to cooperate with each other and maintain confidence.
History
The need for neutrality arrived due to a number of tensions:-
- Territorial Integrity
- Sovereign equality of states
- Self Determination
With such strong patriotic views of one’s country has a definitive chance of disruption of peace. On February 2, 2017, The General Assembly passed the resolution for political neutrality. And thus December 12 is decided as the International Day of Neutrality.
Interconnectedness and peaceful negotiations are hard to keep up when the stakes of lives are too high. Every leader must do what is necessary for their respective citizens. And thus a middle land or neutral terms are thought of so as to benefit everyone.
How to Celebrate
Today, December 12, we must all be proud of international organizations such as the UN who help provide a platform for peaceful discussions whenever any disagreement takes place. We must spread awareness about today so as highlight the importance of the peace we are harboring today. We can attend public gatherings and walks to cheer for all the peacekeepers in our world. Even if it is another country. We should be proud of what we have today and be grateful.
