But, to stay gloomy and embrace melancholy, or just shatter them with our smile, is all that comes from within. In simple words, we are sad when we choose to be. International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer

September 16 is celebrated worldwide as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer every year. United Nations General Assembly proclaimed it on September 19, 1994. This day commemorated the date when the Montreal Protocol on Substance that depletes the ozone layer was signed in 1987. These constituted the daily activities that create awareness on topics related to ozone depletion and climate change.
History
In 1987, representatives from 24 different countries came together in Montreal and declared that it was time to work against destroying the ozone layer. For this, these countries committed themselves, via the Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone Layer, to rid the world of substances that threaten the ozone layer.
A fragile shield of gas, i.e., the ozone layer, protects the Earth from the harmful sun rays, which helps in preserving life on the planet. However, it is paramount that we protect the ozone layer from toxic substances such as hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which are both ozone-depleting substances and potent greenhouse gases that are a cause of the thinning of the ozone layer. Nearly 2,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide in adding to global warming. The successful reduction of HCFC emissions remains one of the UN’s most significant challenges.
How to celebrate
On this day, school educators throughout the world organize classroom activities that focus on topics related to the ozone layer, ozone depletion, and climate change. Few faculties also use educational packages from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) that are specifically tailored to address topics related to the Earth’s ozone layer.
Various activities that are organized by different community groups, schools, local organizations, and individuals across the world include the promotion of special programs and events on saving the ozone layer; ozone-friendly products; the distribution of the UNEP’s awareness posters which are used for events occurring on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. Lastly, the distribution of awards to those who worked hard to protect the Earth’s ozone layer.
