Guggenheim Museum opens in New York City

Thousands of people gathered around the white cupcake shaped building in New York on October 21, 1959. Guggenheim Museum was opened on this day. It consists of the world’s top collection of contemporary art.

Solomon R. Guggenheim along after his retirement began collecting art in the 1930s. Becoming one of the most popular visiting places, it is beautifully located on New York’s impressive Museum Mile, at the edge of Central Park. Around 900,000 visitors are visiting this attractive place every year.

French Revolution: The National Assembly declares martial law in France to prevent uprisings

Martial Law was imposed by the National Assembly in France to prevent further uprisings. It was imposed after the hanging of the baker on 21 October 1789. Martial Law consists of the temporary substitution of military authority for civilian rule and is usually invoked in times of war, rebellion, or natural disaster. When martial law is in effect, the military commander of an area or country has unlimited authority to make and enforce laws.

Women in France allowed to vote for 1st time

The right of women to vote in the elections is termed as Women Suffrage. Before 1945, women did not have the right to participate in the voting and election system in France. The French Union for Women’s Suffrage, formed in 1909, fought for the rights of women in the voting system. It was eventually granted in 1945. It was believed by them that if women can work in factories, then it is illogical to stop them from giving voting rights.

1st British nuclear sub-HMS Dreadnought launched

The United Kingdom launched its first Nuclear powered submarine named HMS Dreadnought in 1960 in the reign of Elizabeth II. The first nuclear-powered sub to be built was the USS Nautilus in 1955. The Royal Navy researched it for nuclear propulsion plants but was suspended in October 1952. The boat made its first dive on 10th January 1963.

Later in 1960, the UK’s second nuclear-powered submarine was launched. HMS Valiant proves to be the first British nuclear submarine.

52nd National Film Awards (India): “Page 3” wins the Golden Lotus

The National Film Awards are presented by the Directorate of Film Festivals. It is an organization set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It is formed to facilitate the best in Indian Cinema. The selection process consisted of a film jury and a non – film jury with different heads involving 16 members and 7 members in them respectively. Awards were announced by each committee chairpersons on 13 July 2005. The ceremony took place at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi and the honor was given by the President of India – Dr. APJ. Abdul Kalam. The competition was among 107 feature films who participated along with 118 non-feature films and 22 books on cinema in 9 Indian languages.
