1910 – M. Baudry is the first to fly a dirigible across the English Channel–from La Motte-Breil to Wormwood Scrubbs.

On 18th October 1910, M. Baudry becomes the first to fly a dirigible, Clément-Bayard No. 2, from the Astra Clément-Bayard airship hangar at La Motte-Breuil, France, to Wormwood Scrubs, England. The dirigible carried six passengers covering a distance of 244 miles in less than six hours. It was the first crossing that the airship made across the English Channel. The airship was built for the French army but was not accepted due to its expensive price.
1962 – James Watson (US), Francis Crick (UK) and Maurice Wilkins (UK) win the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their work in determining the structure of DNA
In 1962, the noble prize for medicine was awarded to James Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins. They were awarded for their commendable work in determining the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick used the key X-ray particles provided by Wilkins and Franklin. The structure of the DNA was discovered by Watson and Crick that explained how information was transferred in living material. The structure shows that two long strands of polynucleotide chains run in opposite directions and spiral around one another in the shape of a double helix to form the DNA.
1973 – Judd Woldon & Robert Brittens musical “Raisin,” premieres in NYC

Raisin is a musical by Judd Woldon and written by Robert Brittens that premiered in the broad-way in the 46th street theatre of the New York City on 18th October 1973. The musical is an adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s play ‘A Raisin in the Sun’. The broad-way musical was well appreciated by the critics and bagged several nominations and awards. Raisin won the Grammy award for the best score from the original cast album in the year 1975. The New York Times called the musical – “A warm and loving work”.
1974 – 1st NBA game at Market Square Arena – Pacers beat Spurs 129-121
The Market Square arena was the home ground of the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). The first NBA game at Market Square Arena was between Pacers and Spurs. The Pacers lost in double overtime, 129–121 in front of 7,473 fans but rose with victory soon after. On 23rd October, the Pacers won over the Spirits of St. Louis with a score of 122-107. The season ended with the Pacers getting into the finals playing against the Kentucky Colonels. Until its demolition in 2001, Market Square Arena was the primary concert venue for virtually all national and international musical acts.
1989 – US 62nd manned space mission STS-34 (Atlantis 5) launches into orbit

STS-34 was the 31st NASA Space Shuttle mission using Atlantis. On 18th October 1989, STS-34 was launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida. On 23rd October in the same year, the spaceship landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The Jupiter bound Galileo was deployed into space via this mission. The mission’s primary task was to deploy this Galileo spacecraft which was attached with IUS Booster. The IUS successfully boosted Galileo toward Venus and the spacecraft was injected on a transfer orbit at 20:20 EDT, and separated from the IUS 47 minutes later.
