1872: New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art unbolted

February 20 was a remarkable day in the books of New York. The New York State Legislature granted an act of Incorporation to the museum on April 13, 1870. Moreover, the founders of the museum included leading artists and thinkers of the day, as well as businessmen and financiers. Therefore, they opened the museum in a building located at 681 Fifth Avenue on February 20, 1872.

1872: Luther Crowell patents Paper Bag Machine

The world is widely using the square-bottom paper grocery bag for a century. So, Daniel J. Boorstin discovered that this paper bag was the most effective innovation in speeding up American retail sales. However, within a few years of its invention, it became a pervasive feature of American life. Moreover, Crowel devised ways to safely handle paper through the machine while working on this invention. The printing press paid him for the rights to use his patented methods and designing printing equipment.

1877: 1st Cantilever Bridge in the US 

In 1877, United States has its first cantilever bridge. The bridge was completed on February 20, 1877 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. This railroad bridge crosses the Kentucky River Palisades, thus connecting two countries i.e. Jessamine and Mercer. Also, the elements of this bridge are the structures that are bound at only one end while the other projects parallel into space (cantilever).

1992: WOR-AM in New York City begins Radio Transmissions

The original owner of the WOR was Bamberger’s Departmental Store in Newark, New Jersey. However, in the early 1920s, the store was hawking radio receivers. Therefore, they wanted to put a radio station on the air to palliate boost receiver sales, as well as for the general public. The U.S. Department of Commerce set aside a single wavelength, 360 meters, on December 1, 1921. But, it was licensed on February 20, 1992, with the randomly call sign of WOR. Newark was the original city of license of the station.

1952: “African Queen” film released in the U.S

John Huston directed “The African Queen” film. It was opened on December 26, 1951, at Fox Wilshire Theater in Beverly Hills (to qualify for the 1951 Oscars). The producers of the film were Sam Spiegel and John Woolf. However, it opened in New York City on February 20, 1952, at the Capitol Theater. The film was based on the African Queen. Moreover, it was available in three languages – English, German and Swahili.

2013: Kepler-37b, the smallest known Exoplanet, Discovered

Kepler-37b is an exoplanet (extra-solar planet). Most importantly, it is the smallest planet that originated around a main-sequence star. Also, its radius is slightly greater than the Moon. Moreover, Kepler Space Observatory discovered it on February 20, 2013 by the Transit (Kepler Mission method. They used asteroseismology to size it. The discovery of Kepler-37b has led Jack Lissauer (a scientist at Ames Research Center, NASA) to conjecture that such little planets are common.

2018: Venezuela, the first country launches an Implicit Currency

The petro, also known as petromoneda, was initially released on February 20, 2018. The government of Venezuela issues this cryptocurrency. The president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, announced the petro in a television address on 3 December 2017. The pre-sale of petro started on February 20, 2018, at -04:00 UTC and ended on 19th March 2018 at -04:00 UTC. 38.4 million tokens were accessible at that time.
