Therefore, here we are with some information that will help you to find out. Which is better, Marvel or DC.
History
The history of comics goes back to the 20th century. Both Marvel and DC were big names in the comic world. In 1938, DC released its first comical character, Superman, in Action Comics no.1. This was a revolution in the superhero genre. With the release of Superman, the costumed superheroes became a mainstay and are the same to date. On the other hand, in 1939, Marvel released Marvel Comics no.1 with the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner.
In the 1940s, it was the “Golden Age” for comics, Marvel released many comics. Captain America was released at this time and became a commercial success. Following Marvel’s footsteps, DC released many comics and introduced many superheroes in 1956, the “Silver Age” for comics. The Flash was updated and Hawkman and Green Lantern were introduced. After this, both companies have successfully, introduced many iconic characters. Both the companies have taken the next steps towards films and television.
Heroes
Both Marvel and DC have iconic heroes that changed our lives as kids. And continues to do so as adults. There are many differences between Marvel and DC heroes. First is the number. Marvel has more heroes than DC. On one hand, Marvel has heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Black Panther, and many more. On the other hand, DC’s popular characters include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Flash. Furthermore, Marvel heroes deal with real-world problems in their personal life more than DC heroes. This characteristic gives them more depth and the audience relates to and understands them better. Whereas, the depiction of DC heroes is such that they can save anybody in any situation. The best examples are Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, struggling to find a job, or Captain America trying to understand the modern world.
Villains
If you have iconic heroes, then you will need iconic villains. Both, Marvel and DC have accomplished this feat. They have given us some nerve-chilling and badass villains. Marvel has villains like Ultron, Loki, Thanos, Red Skull, Doctor Doom, and Norman Osborn. DC has Joker, Lex Luthor, Darkseid, Brainiac, and Amenda Waller. DC’s villains are more shown as psychopaths than Marvel.
Also, many instances prove that DC has better villains than Marvel. For example, if we compare Red Skull to Joker. Red Skull was a Nazi and represents real-world evil. Red Skull was someone who could be made to surrender. In contrast, Joker is more terrifying. Joker is the definition of chaos. Joker represents everything wrong in the world. Furthermore, Joker is a dynamic character who can turn anywhere and do anything. Thus making him more dangerous. Marvel does have terrifying villains like Ultron and Thanos but DC beats it with more promising villains.
Locations and Themes
Both Marvel and DC have different settings. Marvel stories are set more in the real world places as compared to DC. Marvel stories are set in New York, Washington, Japan, Africa, and many more. In contrast, DC stories are set in fictional places inspired by real-life locations. These are Gotham City, Arkham Asylum, Gateway City, and Zambesi. Since Marvel sets its stories in real locations and is close to reality. Therefore, people connect more with Marvel than DC.
Talking about the themes. Both Marvel and DC have similar themes. But Marvel has more variety in its themes than DC. DC has focused more on the theme of justice. For DC heroes, providing justice is the only priority. They do not have any real-life issues. In contrast with that, Marvel has focused on many themes like drug abuse, racism, sexism, homosexuality, and many more. It focuses on justice too but it is not the only dimension of the developing plot. It focuses on modern world issues and is precise. Therefore, it is more relevant and understanding.
Movies and Television
Both Marvel and DC companies chose to put our favorite characters on the big screen. The companies are named Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Detective Comics Extended Universe (DCEU) for movies and TV shows. Talking about movies, Marvel has more than twenty movies. On the other hand, DC has more than thirty movies. But in conquering the cinematic universe, MCU has beaten DCEU. Almost all MCU movies are box office hits with both the 1 billion and 2 billion mark. As for DC, it has disappointed its fans and could not stand on their expectations. DC has only three films as hits and one to hit the 1 billion mark.
Moreover, MCU has maintained consistency in storylines. Before making team-up movies like “The Avengers”, all characters and their backstories were introduced to the audience. When these films were released, people knew where each character was coming from and there was no confusion. With DC, this is not the case. When DC released collaboration movies, there was a lot of confusion about many characters. An example of this is the “Justice League”. There is no doubt that Marvel has figured out the formula for bankable movies.
Where Marvel has conquered cinema, DC has conquered television. Though MCU has more shows than DCEU. But, DC has more ratings and fan following. Some of the DC’s famous shows are Lucifer, Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. On the other hand, Marvel has Agent Carter, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, WandaVision, and Daredevil. Also, MCU had a big loss when Netflix canceled their contract and removed the shows from the platform.
So, these are some relevant facts about your favorites. Honestly, both Marvel and DC are special in their way. Also, we should not forget that both these universes have made our universe colorful and our imaginations come true. Therefore, from these solid facts, you can have a valid argument about which one is better. You and your friends can while watching the movies and series on your weekends. With this, you will spend more time with your friends and relax. So, go ahead, watch them and decide the winner for yourself.
