Remember the last time when you searched for ‘most anticipated movies in 2020’, the excitement to sit in the movie theatre with popcorn? But all your speculations went in vain because COVID-19 changed everything. We witnessed a paradigm shift in the entertainment industry as it was struggling to survive in the new normal. Amid the pandemic, all the theatres were shut down, shooting was halted and movies’ release was delayed. There was a significant rise in the use of OTT platforms. Netflix and chill were no longer a fantasy of a lazy Sunday but a reality of our new normal. Some production companies released their films online, while others waited for normalcy to be restored. Even though we live in a time of uncertainty, we still hope that 2021 will be different from last year.
So without jinxing it, here is the list of 8 movies to look forward to in 2021:
Dune
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is probably the most awaited science-fiction movie of 2021. Based on Frank Herbert’s (1965) award-winning novel under the same name, Denis Villeneuve is ready to blow our minds. The exceptional visuals of the movie after the first trailer drop left everyone mesmerized. The film was set to hit the theatres on 18th December 2020 but got delayed because of the pandemic. With an ensemble of amazing actors like Timothée Chamalet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, and Josh Brolin; the film is ready to release on 1st October 2021 in theatre and HBO Max.
The French Dispatch
The French Dispatch is set in an office of an American magazine in a fictional French city of the 20th century. After the epic trailer, the cinephiles anticipated that the movie would be the highlight of 2020. With Wes Anderson’s trademark cinematography, the movie follows three different storylines. Many describe it as ‘love letters to the journalists’. Wes Anderson boasts of his all-star cast that includes Benicio del Toro, Timothée Chamalet, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, Kate Winslet, Saoirse Ronan, Willem Dafoe, Christoph Waltz, Frances McDormand, and many more! After the expected delays, the film might release in July 2021. (Yes! We are really excited about this one.)
Matrix 4
Are you ready to embark on a new philosophical journey through the gap between realities? Because Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are all set to join Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Priyanka Chopra, and Jessica Henwick. It is hard to predict what Lana Wachowski has for us this time but we can guarantee that it will be epic. The fourth part of the science-fiction franchise will release on December 22, 2021.
No Time To Die
James Bond a.k.a Daniel Craig is back with the final installment of the spy thriller franchise- No Time To Die. Lashana Lynch is the new 007 and Rami Malek will be playing the bad guy who has a connection with Bond’s lover. Director Cary Joji Fukunaga teamed up with Pheobe Waller-Bridge for screenwriting of the final Bond movie. So we can expect Bond to break the fourth wall just like Fleabag (Just kidding, or are we?). The movie will hit the big screens on 30 September 2021. So be ready to say goodbye to this iconic role!
A Quiet Place 2
John Krasinski and Emily Blunt’s sequel of Quiet Place was originally expected to release on March 20, 2020. Keeping the coronavirus pandemic in mind Paramount decided to delay the release. A Quiet Place is a unique modern thriller that tells us the tale of the Abbott Family’s survival in a post-apocalyptic world. John Krasinski successfully managed to create a tense environment with minimal dialogues. The exciting part about the sequel is that Cilian Murphy will join the cast of Quiet Place. The movie will now release on September 17, 2021, so make sure you do not make any noise. Shhh!
Godzilla V/S Kong
Thanks to the new trailer Godzilla V/S Kong, now the internet is divided into Team Godzilla ‘Big thermal lizard’ and Team Kong ‘Big Monke’ (if you know what we mean). The movie is set in Legendary’s MonsterVerse scheduled to release on 26 March 2021 in theatres and HBO Max. It explores the history of titans as several characters in the movie believe that there is a hidden force behind Godzilla’s outrage. This marvelous crossover sequel stars Millie Bobby Brown as Madison, along with Alexander Skarsgard as a scientist caught in the middle of this chaos. So pick your side because this battle will be epic.
Spiderman: No way Home
Marvel Cinematic Universe recently announced that the third installment of Tom Holland’s Spiderman franchise will hit the theatres in Christmas 2021. There is speculation that this might be Tom Holland’s last movie as Spiderman. Rumor has it that Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Alfred Molina (Dr. Octopus from Spiderman 2), and Jamie Foxx (Electro from Amazing Spiderman 2) might make an appearance. So yes, MCU might revive some villains from the past franchises. We hope MCU soon launches the trailer of the movie or Tom Holland can spill the beans if he wants.
Last Night in Soho
Upcoming psychological horror starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie set in the swinging sixties of London. Edgar Wright’s (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and Baby Driver) Last Night in Soho is a rare cinematic gem that cinephiles are really excited about. The storyline goes between the London in 60s and the present day. However, the plot of the story is not yet revealed but Edgar Wright guarantees that it will be different from his other movies. The movie will hit the theatre on April 23, 2021, so go ahead and save the date in your calendar.
We still have questions like will the release dates be postponed any further? Is it safe to go to the theatres? Well, we do not know what the future holds for us but after all, we are hopelessly optimistic creatures on this planet. So, we desperately hope that 2021 is kind to all movie enthusiasts because we all are dying to enjoy our favorite movies in the theatre.
And please no more delays, fingers-crossed!
