Today- December 20

Every day of our life is a result of our past actions. Whatever we have and appreciate today is because of something that happened in the past. Our kin and our great leaders have defined our  traditions, culture, and values. Today folks, on December 20 along with the International Human Solidarity Day, we also celebrate National Sangria day that makes one remember human rights and traditional rites respectively .

NATIONAL SANGRIA DAY

Ola! We all know Spain is famous for its unique culture and exhilarating festivals. Well, it should not be surprising to know that Sangria is a cocktail that comprises wine and fruits. It can be made in a way to suit everyone’s taste. Be it winter or summer, be it a lover of red or white wine. Be it a lover of fruits! Today on December 20, nations across the world celebrate this refreshing, delightful, and fun cocktail.

HISTORY

The origin of this day might seem a little absurd to you. Early Greeks and Romans used to mix their wines with herbs, spices, and fruits. The reason for this was that the water was contaminated and unfit to drink. So, adding a little alcohol and mixing it with wine killed the bacteria. This not only made the water safe to drink but added a tinge of flavor as well.

Spain was well-known for its wine and quality fruits because of its climatic conditions. Their demand for trade was very high and as the distinguished recipe got famous, the locals started calling their wine punches Sangria.

HOW TO CELEBRATE

Host a Sangria brunch! The best way to celebrate this day is to gather all your family and sit down for a good brunch. You can also host a Sangria tasting night where you are making the combination of red and white wine respectively with fruits. Although Sangria is based on traditional red wine, it can be made with white wine too. So, this year replace your Wine Wednesday with delightful Sangria with your friends.

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN SOLIDARITY DAY

This day reminds one to stand in solidarity. Not to a country, religion, or race but rather to humanity. The United Nations recognized that cooperation and unity are important to combat problems related to society, economy, and culture. This day reiterates that all the nations across the world should honor their commitments towards international agreements and to raise public awareness. Hence, the objective of the day is to celebrate ‘Unity in Diversity’.

HISTORY

The United Nations had set eight goals under Millennium Development Goals following the Millennium Declaration adopted in the UN summit of 2000. UN recognized one of the fundamental values of solidarity essential for healthy international relations. Eradication of poverty was one of the main goals for which the UN had set up a World Solidarity Fund. After this, they realized that the promotion of integrity and the spirit of unity also played an important role to combat poverty. Henceforth, on December 20 is recognized as International Human Solidarity Day.

HOW TO CELEBRATE

This day is celebrated by organizing events, seminars, and conferences that raise discussion on the importance of unity in diversity. They also include presentations and round table conferences where people come up with efficient ways to eradicate poverty. It encourages students, scholars, and society to take new initiatives for poverty eradication.
