 1944

                   Americans launch Operation Stalemate—at an extraordinary cost

On September 14, 1944, the U.S. 1st Marine Division lands on the island of Peleliu, one of the Palau Islands in the Pacific, as part of a larger operation to provide support for Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who was preparing to invade the Philippines. The cost in American lives would prove historic.

The Palaus, part of the Caroline Islands, were among the mandated islands taken from Germany and given to Japan as one of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles at the close of World War I.

1949

India’s Constituent Assembly adopts Hindi as an official language. Celebrated today as Hindi Day.

Hindi Diwas is celebrated on the 14th of September, to commemorate the adoption of Hindi in the Devanagari script as one of the official languages of India. As such, on the 50th birthday of Beohar Rajendra Simha on the 14th of September 1949, the efforts came to fruition following the adoption of Hindi as an official language. This decision was ratified by the Constitution of India that came into effect on the 26th of January 1950. Under Article 343 of the Indian Constitution, Hindi written in the Devanagari script was adopted as the official language.

1956

IBM introduces the RAMAC 305, 1st commercial computer with a hard drive that uses magnetic disk storage, weighs over a ton

RAMAC stands for “Random Access Method of Accounting and Control”. IBM RAMAC 305 was the first computer that used moving head magnetic disc storage for secondary storage. After installing it in the U.S. Navy and other private institutions it was published on 14th September 1956. Its design was that of a real-time accounting in businesses. More than 1000 of them were made and production was stopped in 1961

 1964

      John Steinbeck awarded the Medal of Freedom

Steinbeck won many prizes and honors for writing. Nobel Prize and a 1939 Pulitzer Prize for Grapes of Wrath are some of them. He worked as manual labor and journalist when he was writing his first two novels which were not successful. In 1964, He was awarded the medal of freedom in the U.S. on September 14.

                                             Elizabeth Ann Seton becomes the first American-born saint

The first American born Saint- Elizabeth Ann Seton was canonized in 1975  by Pope Paul VI at the Vatican in Rome. She is born in the year 1774, in New York City. Elizabeth Bayley was the daughter of an Episcopalian physician. She devoted much of her time to charity work with the poor and in 1797 founded the Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children in New York. In 1809, she founded the United States’ first religious order, the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph.
