1822: John Phillips becomes 1st mayor of Boston on May 1.

John Phillips was an American politician. He was the father of abolitionist Wendell Phillips and was the one serving as the first mayor of Boston, Massachusetts from 1822 to 1823. 

1893: World Columbian Exposition opens in Chicago.

The world’s fair, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the New World in 1492, was commonly termed as World’s Columbian Exposition. It occupies an area of about 690 acres. However, it ended on October 30, 1893.

1930: 11-year-old Venetia Burney, officially named the planet Pluto.

An astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh had discovered Pluto on February 18, 1930, at the Lowell Observatory. Thus, on May 1, 1930, Venetia Burney, an 11-year-old girl, suggested a clever name Pluto for the planet.

1928: Beginning of service of Pitcairn Airlines.

Eastern Airlines was founded on April 19, 1926, with 304 fleet sizes and 140 destinations. On May 1, 1928, it begins its services with the parent company Eastern Airlines, Inc. While it ceased its operations on January 17, 1991.

1965: USSR launches Luna 5 on May 1; later impacts on Moon.

The Soviet Union operated Luna 5, an unmanned Soviet Spacecraft, with an intention to land on the moon. The duration of the mission continued for 3 days. It was launched on May 9, 1965, with an impact on May 12, 1965.
