1871: Yen became the official currency of Japan.
The early 19th century had the Spanish dollar coins as a medium of currency all throughout the Southeast Asian countries. But, then as all countries switched to their own type of currency, the Japanese followed suit. The Japanese decided to adopt a silver dollar coinage and named them ‘Yen’. The yen was officially adopted by the Meiji government in an Act.
1929: 1st color TV demo, performed by Bell Laboratories in NYC
The first color TV demo was held in the Bell Laboratories in New York. It was demonstrated by H. E. Ives and his colleagues. The very first images were a bouquet of roses and an American flag on the screen. A mechanical system was used to transmit color images between NYC and Washington.
1954 1st atomic power station opens – Obninsk, near Moscow in Russia
At Obninsk, Russia the very first nuclear power plant got installed on June 26. The power plant APS -1 had a net electrical output of 5 MW and was connected to the power grid. It was the first plant to create electricity for commercial use. It started operating the very next day on June 27, 1954.
1967 First ATM installed in Enfield, London.
The first ATM was installed outside a branch of Barclays In Enfield, the north of London. It was invented by John Shepherd-Barron. Then, people found it easier to withdraw cash and they need not depend on any third party for the same.
1998 Opening of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport is Malaysia’s main international airport and one of the prominent airports in Southeast Asia. One of the largest and busiest airports, KLIA handled a whopping 60 million passengers. It has been ranked as the 23rd busiest airport in the world.
