1789 – Congress officially created a U.S. Army
In its absolute first session, the United States Congress had numerous decisions to make. One crucial topic the first representatives and senators expected to address was establishing the U.S. military. However, there was already a colonial army–the Continental Army–that had battled the British in the American Revolution and won under General George Washington. However, this army was not the official army of the United States at that time.
On September 29, 1789, which was the last day of its first session, an act was passed by the U.S. Congress to establish the United States military.
Finally, on September 29, the bill that established the armed forces of the United States of America was passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate. It probably meant very little change
to the men already serving, but it meant to George Washington.
1916 – John D. Rockefeller became the world’s First Billionaire in America
In 1916, John D Rockefeller was an American businessman (oil tycoon), became the world’s first billionaire. Today, the USA may have many billionaires. Still, John was the first man to introduce the status quo of ‘billionaire.’ Back then, he set records with his wealth. His net worth over the last decades of his life easily places him as the wealthiest known person in history. Rockefeller was officially announced as the USA’s first billionaire, with a fortune worth nearly 2% of the national economy. However, by 1937 the Rockefeller fortune was raised to 1.4 billion or 1.5% of GDP of 92 billion.
1962 – Canada Launches its First Satellite, Alouette-I
The Alouette-I scientific satellite has marked Canada’s entry into the space age today. It was seen by many as initiating the most progressive space program of that era. The development of Alouette-I came due to an American invitation, through the NASA in 1958, for international collaboration in its budding satellite programs. A 145-kg satellite was then flown to California, further launched from the Pacific Missile Range at 2:06 a.m. (EST) on Saturday, September 29, 1962. Alouette-I sprung from a two-stage Thor-Agena rocket, which was quickly put into a 1000 km orbit. It then began the top-down study of the ionosphere. Alouette-I was a great success by any
measure.
1971 – Chelsea beat Jeunesse Hautcharage by (13-0)
Chelsea vs. Jeunesse Hautcharage was a Cup Winner’s Cup football match on September 29, 1971. Chelsea recorded the biggest win by European Cup Winner’s Cup competition when they beat Jeunesse Hautcharage by 13-0. The 13-0 win remains the largest ever victory. It is indeed the only time Chelsea have reached double figures. Simultaneously, the overall winning margin of 21-0 is still a record win in European competition.
1988 – The Space Shuttle Discovery Landed
On September 29, 1988, the United States returned after its first manned space mission. However, it was since the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after take-off in the skies over Florida on January 28, 1986. However, with a crew of five, commanded by Frederick Hauck, the space shuttle Discovery lifted off from Cape Canaveral on STS-26, a four-day mission to launch a communications satellite, a replacement for the one lost in the Challenger explosion.
Pilot Richard Covey, Commander Frederick H. Hauck, and specialists John Lounge, David Hilmers, and George “Pinky” Nelson made the five-person crew to the four-day mission. The shuttle crew had been made up of veteran astronauts for the first time, all having made two or three previous spaceflights. The team successfully deployed a satellite and performed several experiments before returning to Earth.
