 1775 – The Continental Congress authorizes construction of two warships, thus instituting an American naval force.

The construction and administration of the first American Naval force were authorized by the Continental Congress on 13th October 1775. The American Naval Force was the precursor of the United States Navy. Until Congress received news that a British naval fleet was on its way, very little consideration had been given to protection by sea. The Continental Navy was formally organized in November due to the outbreak of open hostilities with the British. Esek Hopkins was appointed the first commander in chief of the Continental Navy.

 

1792 – President George Washington lays the cornerstone for the White House.

The first U.S. President, George Washington selected the site for the White House in 1791. The Cornerstone for the White House was laid on 13th October 1792 by President George Washington. A competition design submitted by Irish-born architect James Hoban was chosen immediately after. The history of this building extends far beyond the construction of its walls, from Ground Floor Corridor rooms to State Floor rooms, all have undergone a gamut of transformation. The White House is both the home of the President of the United States and his family and a museum of American history, where countless leaders and dignitaries have been entertained.

1904 – Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams is published.

Sigmund Freud introduces his theory of the unconscious mind concerning dream interpretation in his 1899 book “The Interpretation of Dreams”. Freud also discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex in his book. “The Interpretation of Dreams” was published on 13th October 1904, after several revised editions. Freud’s early theories about the nature of the unconscious dream psychology are explained throughout the book. According to Freud, all dreams represent the accomplishment of a wish on the part of the dreamer and states that even anxiety dreams and nightmares are expressions of unconscious desires.

 

 

1967 – First game of the fledgeling American Basketball Association

On 13th October 1967, the first inaugural game of the American Basketball Association was conducted between Oakland Oaks and Anaheim Amigos, where the Oaks beat the Amigos 134-129 in Oakland, Cal. The ABA included 11 teams in its first season which were – Playing in the Eastern Division were, the Pittsburgh Pipers, Minnesota Muskies, Indiana Pacers, Kentucky Colonels and New Jersey Americans, and the New Orleans Buccaneers, Dallas Chaparrals, Denver Rockets, Houston Mavericks, Anaheim Amigos and Oakland Oaks played in the Western. The ABA was a much flashier league than the NBA, as the league offered players and fans a freewheeling alternative to the stodgy NBA.

1976 – Dr. F.A. Murphy at the Center for Disease Control obtains the first electron micrograph of an Ebola viral particle

On 13th October 1976, the first electron micrograph of an Ebola virus particle was obtained by CDC virologist, Dr. Frederick A. Murphy while working in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He was an expert in photographing viruses peered into a microscope and what he saw was described as a “dark beauty — a horror.” The Ebola virus had never been seen until its moment of discovery. Dr. Murphy is currently a Professor at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas and is known internationally known for his work on rabies, encephalitis and hemorrhagic fevers, with more than 250 articles published on the subject but best recognized for discovering the electron graph of the Ebola virus.
