1857: Charles Dickens read from A Christmas Carol at St. Martin’s Hall in London–his first public reading
Born on February 7, 1812, Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He is known for the creation of some of the world’s most famous fictional characters. A Christmas Carol was a novel by Charles Dickens. It was first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843. Its original title was ‘A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas’.
1859: Jean Francois Gravelet aka Charles Blondin, a French daredevil, becomes the first man to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope
The stuntman, Charles Blondin, is known to be the first man to walk on a tightrope downstream from the Niagara Falls across the gorge in 1859. This was clearly his biggest stunt out of all those done in the past. Thousands of people gathered there to see the stuntman.
1934: Adolf Hitler orders the purge of his own party in the “Night of the Long Knives.”
In German History, June 30, 1934, marks the Night of the Long Knives purge of Nazi leaders by Adolf Hitler. Hundreds of Hitler’s perceived opponents of Hitler were also killed that night. This was a bloody purge of the members of his own party whom he believed had the potential to become political enemies in the future.
1936: Margaret Mitchell’s novel, Gone With the Wind, is published
The famous book by Margaret Mitchell is one of the best selling novels of all time. It forms the basis for the blockbuster 1939 movie. She wrote this book when she was forced to quit her job as a reporter at the Atlanta Journal to recover from a series of physical injuries.
1938: Superman 1st appears in DC Comics’ Action Comics Series issue #1
As you may already know, Superman is a fictional superhero created by the artist Jeo Shuster and writer Jerry Seigel. It made its first appearance in the comic book Action Comics #1, published on April 18, 1938, cover-dated June 1938. The Superman character regularly appears in comic books published by DC Comics, and has been adapted to a number of radio serials, movies, and television shows.
1960: Alfred Hitchcock’s film, Psycho, opens
Psycho was an American psychological horror film produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It was written by Joseph Stefano, starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, John Gavin, Vera Miles, and Martin Balsam. The film was based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert Bloch.
