December 24 – ‘Silent Night’ is composed and more

History is a definition in itself. It is ‘his story’. Also, it an ongoing story of a man and his adventures with life. Things started off with lighting fire with stones. Although now, we have lighters and modern technology to do that for us. Earlier stone men had to write inscriptions on walls to pass messages. Now, we have smartphones and laptops to do our work. Furthermore, man has immensely progressed in life. These were all due to historic events. Today, on December 24, Brag Social brings to you such progress marking events. USA and Great Britain signed Peace treaties. Moreover, the soothing Christmas Carol ‘Silent Night’ was composed today.

1814: A treaty of peace is signed between the USA and Great Britain.

On December 24, 1814, America and Great Britain signed the ‘Treaty of Ghent’. Also, this was an initiative to end the war of 1812. This agreement was a signal of peace. Furthermore, both countries knew that war was causing a lot of loss. They needed each other. In terms of trade and in the name of allies. This was their chance to end all the violence and start anew. With this treaty, both the countries renewed the prewar borders.

1818: Christmas Carol ‘Silent Night’ was composed.

Tomorrow we celebrate Christmas. It is a glorious day. On Christmas eve we sing Christmas Carols. Today, Franz Xaver Gruber composed the beautiful carol ‘Silent Night’. Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics of this carol. Also, everyone sings this on 24th eve to mark the beginning of Christmas. This carol has the power to spread joy across families. UNESCO declared this song as a cultural heritage in 2011. People previously called it ‘Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht’.

1936: First radioactive isotope medicine administered in California.

On this day, in 1936 doctors and scientists created history. This was an iconic day in the past of medicine. On December 24, it was the first-time radiation was used to cure diseases. This was the birth of nuclear medicine. Ernest Lawrence was the pioneer in this field. Moreover, he also received the Nobel Prize in the field of physics. The Donner Laboratory was the scientific lab where Lawrence created the isotopes for the radiation.

1963: New York’s Idlewild Airport is renamed JFK Airport.

In 1942, the famous airport Idlewild was built in New York City. The main cause of building this airport was to relieve LaGuardia of the extreme population traffic. Moreover, in 1963, the authorities decided to rename Idlewild Airport as JKF airport. This was  in remembrance of the late President of America, John F. Kennedy. He was only recently assassinated and hence, New York renamed the airport. In today’s day, JFK is one of the busiest airports across the world.

1968: The first pictures of an Earthrise over the moon are seen by Apollo 8.

Science is the foundation of human technology. In 1968, astronauts made history. On December 24, Apollo 8 sent some pictures to Earth. These pictures for the first time displayed the Earth and a little of the moon’s surface. Astronauts captured these clicks  from the lunar eclipse and were iconic. These pictures were the courtesy of William Anders, the astronaut during the Apollo 8 mission. Moreover, it was a color picture. Hence, giving details to the scientists of those times.
