December 21- The Pilgrims land on Plymouth Rock and more

The days in our history have both been fulfilling and unpleasant. The fulfilling ones came after a lot of harsh and ugly days. Some people had to fight for their rights while others were celebrating their accomplishments. Samuel Slater successfully opened the first cotton mill in the US. The separatists from the UK established the ‘Plymouth Colony’. The people of London were successful in abolishing capital punishment for murder. President Calvin Coolidge signed the Boulder Dam bill today and Abraham Lincoln signed the bill of Medal of Honour. Today, on December 21 Brag Social brings to you a glimpse of these events.

The ‘pilgrims’ were separatists who had a different theology and idea of religious practices. This Church of England did not affirm this. So, these people traveled over the year to Amsterdam and Holland to escape the prosecutions. In 1605, Mayflower landed at Plymouth with ‘pilgrims’. Some were separatists who were traveling to sign a deal with New World and others were just commune. They found an abandoned village whose residents had annihilated due to the plague. These people established themselves here and this came to be known as ‘Plymouth Colony’.

1790-Samuel Slater established the first cotton mill in USA

Samuel Slater was a resident of England. His father died when he was 14. After that, he joined as an apprentice to Jedediah Strutt where he learned a lot about cotton manufacturing. He wanted to take the industry further. At that time, the Britishers had a strict policy for the textile workers. They could not leave the country. Slater defied the orders and escaped to America believing that he would get better opportunities there. In 1790, he joined Almy and Brown in Rhode Island where they successfully established the first cotton mill in the US. Eventually, they had set up a lot of other plants. He was also the founder of the Slatersville town in Rhode Island.

1928-President Calvin Coolidge signs the Boulder Dam bill

Every spring, the Colorado River would flood the riverbanks and wreak havoc in the nearby areas. On December 21, 1928, President Coolidge signed the bill authorizing the Hoover Dam. The Boulder Canyon Project Act appropriated $165 million for the same. Six companies won the bid of the construction of this dam during the great depression. Eventually, in 1935, the Hoover Dam was constructed in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the US states of Nevada and Arizona.

1964- Abolition of the death penalty for murder

The UK government passed ‘The Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act’ on December 21 1965 They abolished the death penalty for murder. During 1816-1820, ‘The Bloody Code’ was followed in certain parts of the UK. It made some petty offenses like stealing, shoplifting, forgery, fraud, and many more capital punishments. This law changed as Great Britain’s House voted to ban the death penalty in 1964 but overlooked espionage, high treason, piracy with violence, and other capital offenses under military law.
