1582 – Russia ends its 25-year war with Poland.
The war between Russia and Poland (1558 – 1583) was termed as the Livonian War. It was fought for the control of Old Livonia. It started on 22 January 1558 and ended with drastic effects on 10 August 1583. Russia losing the war ended up losing the sessions of Estonia, Livonia, Courland and Lithuania to Poland.
1954 – English jockey Sir Gordon Richards retires with a world-record of total 4,870 victories
The life span of Sir Gordon Richards was from 5th May 1904 to 10th November 1986. He was an English jockey and was considered as the world’s greatest jockey ever. He was honored with Knighthood Award in 1953 for his world record of 4870 career wins. When it comes to racing awards, he is no less with 26 times winner British flat racing Champion jockey. He is the only flat jockey knighted ever.
Later Johnny Longden of the United States broke the record later. Richards was the first jockey ever to be knighted.
1960 – NASA launches Discoverer 13 satellite; it would become the first object ever recovered from orbit.
Discoverer 13 was an Earth – Orbiting satellite, which was designed to test spacecraft engineering techniques and to attempt deceleration, through the atmosphere. Discoverer 13 was launched on a Thor Agena from Vandenberg on 10 August 1960. The program was classified operation effectively managed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of Department of US and the U.S. Air Force.
1979 – “Off the Wall” 5th studio album by Michael Jackson is released (Billboard Album of the Year 1980)
Off the Wall is the 5th solo studio album by Michael Jackson. Epic Records released it on 10th august 1979. It was Jackson’s first album by Epic Records and was crafted from disco, pop, funk, R&B, Softrock and Broadway Ballads. The theme involves loneliness, romance and escapism.
1983 – 1st World Championships in Athletics: Carl Lewis wins gold in Men’s Long Jump
Fredrick Carlton Carl Lewis is a track and field athlete. He won 9 Olympic gold medals, 1 Olympic Silver medal. He won 10 World Championship medals. His span of career was from 1979 to 1996. He is one amongst the 3 Olympic athletes who won the gold medal in the same individual event in four consecutive Olympic games. his world record in the indoor long jump is still outbreaks. Over the span of 10 years, he consecutively won 65 times which makes it sports longest undefeated in athletics. Amongst all his honors, one is winning the gold medal in Men’s Long Jump on August 10th, 1983.
