History Of April 21

History shapes our future. It helps to understand the present. Therefore, the historical incidents that happened on April 21 throughout the centuries are important even today. The nature of these incidents, however, varies. While some were political, others were related to invention and science. Few were even about the discoveries made. Thus, here is are few milestones:

1789- John Adams becomes the first Vice President of the US

John Adams was the second President of the US. However, before this, he served as the first vice-president of the nation. On April 21, 1789, he began to administer his duties in the Senate. Hence, John Adams was elected twice to serve as the vice-president under George Washington. Before being a politician, he was also a well-known attorney. He even led the American Revolution. Adam’s essay, “Thoughts on Government” had a great influence on American society.

1820- Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish scientist identified electromagnetism

An important breakthrough happened in the field of science on April 21. Danish scientist Hans Christian Oersted identified electromagnetism for the first time. Thus, he established an empirical connection between electricity and magnetism. As a result, Oersted’s law was named after him. In 1820, he finally published his theory. It stated that a compass needle gets deflected from the magnetic north. This takes place through a nearby electric current. 

1960- Brasilia becomes the capital of Brazil

The history of Brasilia i.e. the central capital of Brazil goes back to the eighteenth century. Although the proposal of the name happened in 1822, the construction began in 1956. The construction took 41 months. Starting from 1856 to April 21, 1960. Before this Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil. However, after the inauguration on April 21, Brasilia became the official capital of the nation. Oscar Niemeyer was the chief architect of this project. Along with that, Roberto Burle Marx a landscape designer. 

1991- Archaeologist Frank Goddio discovered San Diego, Dutch Galleon sunk in 1600 

A major discovery happened on April 21, 1991. French archaeologist Frank Goddio found San Diego, a Dutch Gelloen which sank in 1600 off Fortune Island, in the Philippines. San Diego was initially a trading ship. Although later, it turned into a warship for the Spanish Navy. Yet, an unfortunate incident unfolded on December 14, 1600. San Diego sunk off Fortune Island. Four hundred years later, Frank Goddio discovered the ship. This in turn, also led to the discovery of 34, 407 artifacts found in the ship. 

2013- Horacio Cartes becomes the President of Paraguay

Horacio Cartes was a businessman and politician. He served as the President from 2013 to 2018. Cartes was a member of the Colorado Party, Paraguay. During his campaign for the presidency, he made a promise to improve the nation’s infrastructure and create more employment. He also aimed to attract more international investments. Consequently, he won the elections with a vote of 45.80%. Yet, in 2018 he gave his resignation following the controversy around some of his actions and statements.
