“Welcome to the real world. It sucks. You’re gonna love it.” – Monica
Do you ever just sit on your couch and wonder what life would have been without the mere presence of web series and television shows? From time immemorial, our lifestyles have revolved around the daily lives of our favorite characters. Moreover, just watching them contemplate their topsy turvy life decisions adds the required contentment to our hassled existence. For over two decades now, directors and producers have created a saga of innumerable television shows that still hold the ability to make us roll on the floor laughing and clutching our stomachs in pain. In 1994, Friends, a timeless show, was introduced to us. This show was a fiction based comedy series. It not only made us appreciate our friend circles but also made us visualize our future lives. Having said that, we are not that great with life advice, but can we interest you in a sarcastic comment?
How are David Crane and Marta Kaufmann our lobsters?
In 1993, David Crane and Marta Kaufmann began writing the pages of one of the most iconic sitcoms across the world. Originally the show was going to be named ‘Insomnia Cafe’. A fun fact about our precious directors is that they go long back. This show is a reflection of their everlasting friendship. Their connection with the show de facto helped us feel like Rachel, Joey, Chandler, Monica, Ross, and Phoebe were family. Both Kaufmann and Crane are American directors. They also are well-known producers who together created shows such as ‘Kevin Bright’, Veronica’s Closet, and ‘Jesse’. For the screenplay of Friends, both the directors hired young writers. This was also a bonus to the convivial story.
Seven, seven, seven… reasons why Friends has an exuberant plotline:
“You can’t just give up! Is that what a dinosaur would do?”- Joey
The show starts with Rachel Green looking all disheveled in a wedding dress. As she enters Central Perk, she meets her high school best friend, Monica. Moreover, this is also when the audience realizes that Green has escaped her wedding and is now looking for shelter. Here the watchers also meet Chandler, Ross, Phoebe, and Joey. The sitcom revolves around the love lives, the break-ups, the neighbors, and the festivities of these six people.
One falls in love with Joey’s flirting skills and Chandler’s sarcasm. You are almost addicted to Monica’s cleaning habits and exhausted with the number of divorces Ross has been a part of. Additionally, you fall head over heels for Rachel and almost shed a tear at every sadistic life story Pheebs recites. The lives of our protagonists are far from normal.
The Friends series gives us 10 seasons and hence, 10 years filled with love, agony, friendship, and heartbreak. To the audience’s surprise as the storylines progress one sees Monica and Chandler fall in love. The audience also witnessed the on and off relationship of Ross and Rachel. Well, because ‘they were on a break’ the viewers often see Rachel dating other men. The entire plotline is as interesting as “The Ugly Naked Guy’s life circumstances”.
In 2006, when season 10 premiered, Kaufmann and Crane took us on an unforgettable journey. There were ups and downs. Furthermore, there were weddings and a lot of growing up to do. The audience witnesses the ever famous marriage of Phoebe and the reconciliation of Ross and Rachel. If you’re a rom-com fan, you will also come across the ‘running through the airport to find eternal love’ kind of scene.
Making you aware of the characters…Unagi:
Joey Tribbiani
Matt Leblanc plays the hot guy next door in Friends. One sees different shades of this character throughout the series. He is an innocent man with exceptional skills to woo women. He also loves pizza. And he does not share food. Foosball and Chandler are his happy place. Moreover, you are sure to fall in love with Joey if he asks you ‘How you doin?”.
Chandler Bing
Well, are you sarcastic at the most inappropriate times? If yes, then you will adore Chandler Bing. Matthew Perry takes his
audience on a roller coaster ride. With his to-die-for looks and peculiar dressing style, Bing defines awkward. Further on, in the show, he falls in love with Monica. He is also a ‘transponster’. Oh wait, that isn’t a word…
Monica Geller
Courtney Cox will give you all motherly vibes. She is an atypical chef and improves your housekeeping skills. She is a perfectionist and also, Chandler’s wife. This woman is the perfect explanation for an independent lady with ambitious dreams. Oh, also you will usually find her saying “I KNOWWW”.
Rachel Green
Jennifer Aniston does full justice to her role as Rachel. She is a woman of different colors and will keep you entertained throughout. With her up-to-date fashion sense and extraordinarily rich parents, Rachel shows us how to live life to its fullest. Overall, Rachel is seen experimenting with her life and also her hairstyles.
Phoebe Buffay:
“Smelly cat, smelly cat what are they feeding you..” you have not heard this song? Well, Lisa Kudrow will be pretty upset, because her entire character revolves around these lyrics. Phoebe illuminates us with the realities of life. She grew up without her parents. Also, an annoying twin, Ursula. Buffay owns a half-broken taxi from her grandmother and also tries to name herself Princess Consuella Banana Hammock. This girl teaches us to never give up.
Ross Geller:
Ross is the sixth character of the show. David Schwimmer is seen juggling between his multiple wives and divorces. Moreover, he is also the dad of Emma and Ben. He has a humorous storyline where he firstly is married to a lesbian. Then he says the wrong name on the alter. This fun loving character is a focal point for multiple laughs. Moreover, his favorite phrase is “I’m Finee”.
Why Friends is not a moo point?
If you ask any 90s or 00s kid if they have watched friends, the answer ought to be yes. This sitcom has not only impacted people but also changed their lives. ‘Friends’ is not only a television show. It is an emotion. All the characters in the show taught us one
or the other life lesson. Firstly, Rachel with her bold lifestyle taught us to take a risk. If you want to chase after your dream job? Do it. Want to go on a search for eternal love? Do it. Secondly, Joey teaches us that it is okay to have a different point of view. Not everyone thinks the same. Next, Phoebe inspires us to do what we want without thinking of others. Live your life on your terms.
Ross is our life guru. He edifies us to keep things real. Life is beautiful if you remember the realities of living in an outward world. Moreover, Monica asks her viewers to always be in high spirits and rage towards the world with motivation. With her obsessive behavior, you might think she is almost ordering you to do it. Finally, Chandler lightens the mood. He advocates the saying “Grass is greener on the side you water it”.
This show is the epitome of perfection. With the ebb and flow of life, Friends teaches us to live life with a grain of salt. Things do not always work our way. But, there is always a plan. Follow the flow of life, things will fall into place.
“I deserve a real celebration and I am not gonna let some sweaty little man make me feel badly about it.” – Friends
