Each new day comes with new opportunities to celebrate and helps us to become more aware of the things around us. Today, let us make this year more fruitful by learning something new. We, at Brag Social, are here to spread awareness about the daily occurring events. Read on to find what is special today on September 8.

INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

This day takes place on September 8 every year and is celebrated to raise awareness among the people and concern about the literacy problems in our local communities and globally too. It was found by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO] in 1996. Although much progress has been made in improving literacy rates in the more than fifty years since the first International Literacy Day, illiteracy remains a global problem. There are more about 750 million adults around the world who cannot read.

HISTORY OF THE DAY

In 1965, international literacy day was conceived, in Tehran, Iran they discussed at the “World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy,”.
In 1966, UNESCO declares September 8 International Literacy Day to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies.
People participated in activities to reduce illiteracy levels in the global world.

International Literacy Day turns its focus toward the literacy skills necessary to navigate digital-mediated societies.

ACTIVITIES THAT CAN BE PUT ON

  1. DONATE BOOKS TO LOCAL CLASSROOM – You can donate books to the people who have a scarcity of them and are interested to read them. You can donate them books and can receive their blessings back. By donating the books, you can become their hero on the occasion of this special day.
  2. CAN START A LIBRARY – You can start today with a small lending book library. Let the concept of the library be “take a book, return a book”. We love that these little libraries are accessible 24/7 and there are never any late fees or fines.

LITERACY is very important for everyone in this world because it improves brain health, also increases community participation. One can also gain knowledge of power and can also help one to improve his communication skills, employment skills. Literacy is the key to personal empowerment and gives us personal dignity and self-worth.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

“When you talk, you are only repeating something you know. But if you listen, you may learn something new.”

If we will start to listen to people it will help us learning something new or to come to know about such things that we do not know. If we will just repeat what we are saying it will make other people who are sitting before us awkward and also, we are just repeating things so nothing is coming new to our brains. We should also make a chance for another person to speak, so that, the contribution made in the conference by both sides is equal. LISTENING IS MORE HELPFUL THAN SPEAKING.
