National Fruitcake day
Ah, Christmas just said goodbye to us for this year. However, it did leave us loads and loads of chocolates and cakes behind. I call for the plum cake! Anyway, on December 27 , the United States celebrates National Fruitcake day. A day devoted to cake lovers, fruitcake lovers, mind you. The aroma of the candied fruit and nuts wafts in the air filling the atmosphere with sweetness. C’mon then, let’s see what the history behind this amusing day is.
History
Ancient Romans experimented with pomegranate seeds, raisins, nuts in barley puree to come with fruitcakes. However, later on, dried fruits became more commonly available. Along with them, honey and spices were incorporated in these cakes too. There remain many variations in the making of fruitcakes worldwide.
What made the fruitcake so famous in the US? Reason number could be the fact that there was an abundance of sugar the US had because of the colonies. Second, it was then found out that sugar could preserve fruits too! Thus the concept of candied fruits came into existence.
How to celebrate?
Different types of traditions can be observed by different families. Laughter and merriment surround the kitchen when people bake fruit cakes together. People then invite family and friends over for some fruit cake at their homes. Sometimes, they also share with each other their fruitcake recipes, you know, the whole secrets are out! You could call Kirigami the sister of Origami. In both of the Japanese art forms, you follow various folding techniques for obtaining particular designs and shapes.
