Today, on October 17, we celebrate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty to spread awareness about poverty and Mulligan day to celebrate second chances.
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
Poverty has always been a social struggle affecting communities far and wide with unendurable impacts on people. As we move forward, awareness for eradication of poverty has been increasing in recent decades. Due to increased cultural awareness and sympathy with true connection and motion, the complexity of poverty is now understood better. The experience of people living in poverty and those left behind must be valued, respected and reflected to build an equitable and sustainable world.
History
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was first observed on 17th October 1987. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. This proclaimed poverty as a violation of human rights and since then, people from all backgrounds have been gathering on October 17 every year to renew their commitment and show their solidarity with the poor.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 17th October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty under the resolution 47/196 adopted on 22nd December 1992.
How To celebrate?
Opting for activities related to the eradication of poverty will be the best way to celebrate this day. Observe the day by finding an organization conducting events that focus on spreading awareness about poverty and its eradication.
Consider volunteering at homeless and underprivileged places and serve your humanity by providing food, clothes and necessities. You may conduct online workshops spreading awareness about this day. Strive and work towards the efforts of anyone eradicating poverty.
Mulligan Day
The term ‘mulligan’ means to ‘give another chance’ or the chance to try again. Failures are the pillars of our success, thus rising above our failures we may give ourselves or others a second chance to become better whatever we do. Whether it is a former relationship with a friend or loved one, an old hobby that you abandoned or a past, give yourself a chance to rectify them
History
Canadian golfer David Mulligan made a mistake during a game and retook his shot and thus, the term ‘a mulligan’ was evolved which means the chance to try again. Mulligan Day is about trying again if you don’t succeed the first time. The term was approved by the United States Golf Association in the 1940s and hence 17th October was considered Mulligan Day.
How to celebrate?
Golf courses usually hold celebrations for Mulligan Day, you can always volunteer at these celebrations. This day is about second chances, so give yourself a chance at something you had abandoned long back due to failure.
Not just hobbies but second chances can also be given to subdued relationships and friendships.
