Today- January 30

On January 30, we celebrate World Leprosy Eradication Day and School Day of Non-Violence and Peace. This day also marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Therefore, both these events are related to him. While World Leprosy Eradication Day talks about raising awareness against the disease, leprosy. School Day of Non-Violence and Peace educates us about the importance of non-violence. In fact, we all know how Mahatma Gandhi preached non-violence and his aversion against any form of violence. Today we would like to talk more about the real significance of these two events and how we can celebrate them on this day.

World Leprosy Eradication Day

World Leprosy Eradication Day, observed every year on 30th January, in order to raise public awareness about leprosy. Leprosy is an infectious chronic disease that mainly harms the nervous system. It mostly damages the nerves present in the hands, feet and face.

History

French humanitarian Raoul Follereau decided to celebrate World Leprosy Eradication Day on January 30, in order to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi had compassion for all those people who were affected by leprosy. Leprosy is one of the oldest diseases to be recorded in the world.

How to celebrate

We can all celebrate this day by striving towards ending the discrimination and social stigma which follows with this disease. We need to stop secluding leprosy-affected people and try to raise awareness regarding leprosy. For example, we should include people who are affected by leprosy and accept them as a part of our society. Moreover we need to show them love and compassion. As a result, not only do we boost their confidence but also contribute to the fight against leprosy.

School Day of Non-Violence and Peace

The main aim of School Day of Non-Violence and Peace is to advocate education for harmony, tolerance and solidarity. Moreover it also teaches to respect human rights and to promote non-violence and peace. We celebrate this on  January 30 as a tribute on the anniversary of the death of Mahatma Gandhi.

History

The School Day of Non-Violence and Peace (DENIP) established in 1964. This day was founded by the Spanish poet Llorenzo Vidal Vidal. School Day of Non-Violence and Peace promotes non violence through education. The message that this day portrays is “Universal love, Non-Violence and Peace. Universal Love is better than egoism, Non-violence is better than violence, and Peace is better than war.”

How to celebrate

We can celebrate this day by teaching the students the importance of non-violence. For example each one of us can cite examples based on experience and prove how non violence can help us reach our goals. In fact we all know violence is not the option to achieve success. Therefore, children need to learn this from the very beginning. Then this day will be able to retain its importance.
