INTRODUCTION
Today, December 22, is celebrated as National Mathematics Day all across the nation. It marks the birth anniversary of the eminent mathematician. He was born in Erode and unfortunately died at the age of 32 due to tuberculosis. He made remarkable contributions specifically to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions. Ramanujan was a self-taught child. One shocking revelation is that he failed in all other subjects other than mathematics. He gave to the world 3500 formulas that still have not been solved and proved by scientists. His discoveries opened up new opportunities.
HISTORY
Dr. Manmohan Singh declared this day as National Mathematics Day. He went to Madras University to pay tribute to him and celebrated his 125th birth-anniversary in 2012. Eventually, he decided to mark this day to honor Ramanujan’s work in the field of mathematics. It was on February 26, 2012, that Dr. Manmohan Singh declared the same. As a result, every year, December 22 is observed as National Mathematics Day.
HOW TO CELEBRATE?
December 22 is marked to acknowledge achievements of a renowned mathematician. The objective of this day is to disseminate information on the importance of mathematics. Schools, colleges, universities, and related institutions organize various educational programs and events. There are many mathematical quizzes, workshops, panel discussions on Ramanujan’s contributions. The NASI (The National Academy of Science India) one of the oldest science academies’ conducts a workshop every year. But, however, it is only for educating the popular lecturers and experts from the field of mathematics from across the nation about applications of Ramanujan’s discoveries and work. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recognizes this day and agreed to work in a framework with India to spread mathematics learning and understanding.
‘An equation means nothing to me unless it expresses a thought of a God’.
It’s a very famous quote by Ramanujan. Ramanujan was a very religious brahmin. He believed that god was all pervasive and is around him. So, when he used to solve equations, he saw it as means to communicate with God. Subsequently, the belief that god is universal is what made him create the equations and solve them. In other words, he believed the more equations he solved, the more he to got closer to God. This also helped him to stay concentrated and focus on his work.
