November 23 – Willis Campell Act and more

The week of Thanksgiving is something that everyone looks forward to. You meet your family, friends. In fact, you can certainly go on an adventure by yourself. Some similar events happened in the past as well. This November 23, history showed us that there is always a first time for everything. Some fun and eventful inventions and expeditions were done.

1921 – Willis Campell Act

President Warren G.Harding signed the Willis Campell Act on November 23. In other words, the anti beer bill. As the name suggests it is regarding a ban on beer. Hold your horses, it bans doctors prescribing beer. Funny right! The nation reached a state where doctors started prescribing beer as a medicine. This bill limited the amount of beer prescribed and that too for a 90 day period. Only Vinous and Spiritual liquor is allowed medically.

1960 – Tiros 2 launched

Weather prediction is a hard job. Since the weather is never entirely stable. To clarify, It keeps changing. For instance, if you want to know the weather in another place, you can’t. This is because it is hard to know. Consequently, Tiros 2, a weather satellite is launched to be in the know. Tiros orbited the earth every 98 minutes. It’s solid-fuel thrusters allowed high-speed spin and travel. The satellite has an induced magnetic field. Therefore, that and the earth’s magnetic field allowed it to remain at a certain altitude.

 

1990 – The first all-woman expedition to the South Pole

70 days is a long time to stay away from home. This is true in the case of women and men. Your family will be missing you and you the same. While you are on an expedition. 12 Russian, 3 American, and 1 Japanese woman set off on an adventure to the South Pole on November 23. They started their 70-day journey from Antarctica. It is usually men who set off on voyages. However, this time the women are heading out to do scientific exploration and research. 

1992 – The first Smartphone Introduced

The first smartphone is introduced on November 23, 1992. IBM Simon Personal Communicator came out. This had been done at COMDEX, Las Vegas in Nevada. It is the first touch screen personal digital assistance. It is equipped with the facility to send and receive emails. Fax and cellular pages can be sent and received too. Calculator, address book, world time clock, electronic notepad, and appointment scheduler are available too. The presence of all these facilities made it a “smartphone”.

 

2005 – Ellen Johnson Sirleaf: First elected women president of Liberia

The 24th President of Liberia is Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. She is also the first elected woman to hold a state position. Moreover, she is the first woman leader in Africa. She won the presidential election on November 23, 2005, and took office on January 16, 2006. Being a homemaker originally, Sirleaf worked her way through life. She attained a bachelor’s degree in economics and worked for the agriculture and finance department in Africa. Apart from this, she has had experience in the UN as well. She is an inspiration for girls and women in Africa.
