930: World’s oldest parliament, the Icelandic Parliament, the Alþingi (anglicized as Althing or Althingi), established

On this day, the oldest legislature in the world, the national parliament of Iceland was established. It was founded at Thingvellir (the “assembly fields”), which is almost 45 kilometers (28 mi) east of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík.

1868: Christopher Latham Sholes patents the Sholes and Glidden typewriter

The first commercially successful typewriter was the Sholes and Glidden Typewriter designed by the great American inventor Christopher Latham Soles.

1885: Former general and president Ulysses S. Grant dies at the age of 63

Born on March 4, 1869, Ulysses S. Grant was an American politician and soldier. He served as the 18th President of the United States between the period 1869-1877. He died with a throat cancer on June 23, 1885.

1902: Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy renew the Triple Alliance for a12-year duration

The Triple Alliance was an agreement between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed on May 20, 1882. Shortly after renewing the Alliance in June 1902, Italy secretly extended a similar guarantee to France.

1960: 1st contraceptive pill is made available for purchase in the U.S.

The name of the first approved contraceptive pill was Enovid, which was used as an oral contraceptive. The FDA approves the sale of this contraceptive on June 23, 1960. It was manufactured by G.D. Searle and Company.

1974: 1st extraterrestrial message sent from Earth into space

According to Wikipedia, The Arecibo message was a 1974 interstellar radio message which carried basic information about humanity and Earth sent to globular star cluster M13. It was meant as a demonstration of human technological achievement, rather than a real attempt to enter into a conversation with extraterrestrials.
