June 16 – Bloomsday and more

Welcome to another bright day in June. There’s always something or the other happening around the world. The world, being so large, has witnessed infinite inventions, innovations, achievements, and other milestones in the past. You can do something amazing today, and maybe it is something that we write about in our today column in the coming years. We, at Brag Social, try to keep you updated with all the happenings of the past and present. Let’s read about the historical milestones of June 16.

1858: Abraham Lincoln, in accepting the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Illinois, declares that “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

On this day, more than 1,000 delegates gathered in the Springfield, Illinois, statehouse for the Republic State Convention. The sentence stated above depicts the danger of slavery-based disunion, and it rallied Republicans across the North.

1904: Bloomsday, the celebration of the life of Irish writer James Joyce.

Bloomsday is observed annually in Dublin and elsewhere on June 16, as a commemoration and celebration of the life of the Irish writer James Joyce. The day is named after the protagonist of his 1922 novel Ulysses, Leopold Bloom.

1910: The first Father’s Day is celebrated in Spokane, Washington

Father’s Day was founded at the YMCA, Spokane, Washington in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. The first celebration was held on June 19, 1910. Sonora’s father was a single parent who raised his six children. His father was Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart.

1925: France accepts a German proposal for a security pact

The German proposal for a security pact was accepted by France. France did not reply till June 16. This was the beginning of the 1925 relations between Germany and its European neighbors, especially France.

1952: Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl is published in the United States

The Diary of a Young Girl is a book of writings kept by Anne Frank while she was hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The diary has since been published in more than 60 languages.
