January 29 is a date that has seen the evolution of romance, thriller and fiction. From building automobiles to apparatus for the food industry, this date has seen many firsts of its kind. Unforgettable movies made it to the screen. Moreover, breakthroughs in science were witnessed. Legends were born and a few were lost. Let’s dive in a little deep about the events that happened over years today over the past years.
1595 – Romeo Juliet performed for the first time in theatres
At present, extremely diverse audience are retold the evergreen play, Romeo and Juliet in a variety of ways. William Shakespeare wrote this phenomenal play around 1590 – 1595 . It was first performed on 29th January 1595. This play is all about the desires, longing and passions of young love. However, they are forced away due to family feuds. Their deaths brought reconciliation to the family disputes. Although the couple could not earn their “happily ever after”, they are yet the star crossed lovers.
1886 – Karl Benz patents the Benz Motorwagen
The world as we know today has a craze on automobiles. The evolution of automobiles is all due to the creativity, tenacity and passion of men and women who have brought these beasts to life. When talking about geniuses, it is completely appropriate to mention Karl Benz. He was the creator of the very first production automobile, the “Benz Patent Motorwagen”. Karl Benz applied for a patent on Jan 29th of 1886. Moreover, the contribution of Bertha, the wife of Karl Benz was highly appreciated. She boldly drove the vehicle on a journey of 66 miles believing the talent of her husband to show the world the machine was feasible.
1924 – Carl Taylor patents ice cream cone rolling machine
Frank and Robert Menches were the masterminds to discover edible ice-cream cones. Serving ice-creams at St. Louis world’s fair, with an output of customers, they eventually ran out of bowls to serve ice-cream in. A few stalls away, a pastry chef was selling zalabia. Zalabia is a fried dough pastry from Syrian culture. The Menches brothers rolled zalabia into cones as a holder of ice-cream scoops. Thus, giving birth to “Ice-cream cones”.
Carl Taylor was a customer to the menches brother. He returned home that day and spent nearly the next twenty years creating a machine that can manufacture ice-cream cones at a much affordable price in huge quantities. On Jan 29, 1924, The Ice cream rolling machine was filed and applied for a patent as well. Later, he founded the ice-cream cone factory.
2014 – Archaeologists discover the oldest Roman Temple (6th C BC)
Romans believe that the base of any religion is in keeping their gods happy, which will bless them with good fortune. Thus, it was very important for Romans to pray on a daily basis.
Roman culture and its architectural glory is nothing without the temples they have built. These temples have a gabled roof, a frontal staircase, roman-life sculptured walls and also a deep-porch. Additionally, the few temples are dedications for the emperors. In the foot of Capitoline hill, lies Medieval Sant’Omobono church, which according to the archaeologists dates back from the 6th century. Not to mention, this temple is the mark of the eternal city “the ancient Rome”. Archaeologists found this temple on Jan 29 of 2014.
2015 – scientists discover to convert normal cells to stem cells in mice
Each and every cell in our body has a purpose and tasks to do, but stem cells are cells that function or transform itself into the required cells. With this important quality, they can serve as a replacement for damaged tissues. Cardiovascular diseases, tissue regeneration, brain diseases, almost every form of cancer, and cell deficiency treatments require stem cells. On 29th of January of 2015, scientists managed to convert normal human skin cells into embryonic stem cells. At first mice cells were converted into stem cells. Later, they were successful with the human cells too.
