Charles Darwin sets sail from England (1831)
December 27 was the day when Charles Darwin set off on his five-years expedition on the HMS Beagle from Plymouth, England. He visited a wide range of diverse flora and fauna and gathered a huge amount of information while travelling through the southern Atlantic and Pacific ocean. This information later proved to be very useful in giving rise to his ground-breaking theory on evolution. This work is known as ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection’. The theory suggested that organisms evolve through a process called ‘natural selection’.
“Peter Pan” releases in London (1904)
One of James Matthew Barrie’s most famous plays of all time, Peter Pan premiere on December 27, 1904. The first performance was in Duke of York’s Theater in London. J.M. Barrie was born in 1860. He studied from the University of Edinburgh. During his writing career, he wrote many plays. Few are still performed today but the play Peter Pan is the most treasured of all. The play Peter Pan is about a mischievous ‘Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up’. The story tells us about Peter Pan’s adventures on the mythical island of Neverland.
International Monetary Fund (1945)
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) came into existence on December 27, 1945. It was a part of Bretton Woods agreement that had the goals to create an effective foreign exchange system. It also introduced a system of convertible currencies at fixed exchange rates. The IMF aims to reduce poverty all over the world, promote international trade, global economic growth and financial stability. IMF also provides loans to economically distressed countries. It also has a total of 190 member countries. It organises ‘Capacity Building Programs’ for providing training, technical assistance and policy advice to the member nations.
The World Bank (1945)
The World Bank is an international organisation. It came into existence today in 1945. The IBRD Articles of Agreement were drawn up at the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference. This took place between July 1 to July 22, 1944. However the governing documents were effective from December 27, 1945. There have been 3 amendments in it uptil now. The World Bank aims towards the betterment of the developing nations. It provides financing, advice and research to help countries boost their economy. It also provides developmental assistance to financially weak countries.
Apollo 8 returns to Earth (1968)
The Apollo 8 mission was indeed a historic one. It was the first manned mission to the moon. On December 27, 1968, Apollo 8 returned back to Earth safely. A three-stage Saturn 5 rocket was lanched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It was also the first spacecraft to enter lunar orbit. The astronauts in this mission were Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders. They were the first human beings to see the Earth in its entirety. Also, they were the first to see the far side of the moon.
