December 22 – Barack Obama ends “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and more

1829 – The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad opens the first passenger railway line.

The first passenger railway line ensued opening on December 22,1829. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is one of the oldest railroads in the United States. It is the first steam-operated railway to charter a common carrier of freight and passengers. Additionally, the merchants of Baltimore, Maryland established the railroad. It was built to compete with the merchants of New York who had recently opened the Erie Canal for trade in the west. Charles Carol laid the first stone for the line on July 4, 1828. The railroad extended from Wheeling, Virginia, covering a distance of 379 miles.

1877 “American Bicycling Journal” begins publishing

On December 22, 1877, the first issue for the “American Bicycling Journal” ensued publishing. The magazine launch took place to honor and celebrate the bike community. It covers topics such as advocacy and policies of the bike community. Not to mention, it also includes stories on from Bike educators and advocates making biking better. The magazine is published biannually. It is distributed among the most committed and passionate bicyclists in the United States. The prime focus of the magazine is educating, and growing the bike movement. Also, making biking better for everyone is what the American Bicycling aims.

1882 1st string of Christmas tree lights created

Edward H. Johnson put the first string of electric Christmas tree lights together in 1882. Johnson, one of Thomas Edison’s friend and partner hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs and wound them around his Christmas tree on December 22, 1882. To everyone’s surprise, the tree not only illuminated but also revolved radiating the sparkly lights. However, allegedly Thomas Edison invented the first string of Christmas light. Before the invention of electric lights, people used candles to light up Christmas trees. Moreover, after this wonderful invention, it took nearly 40 years for electric Christmas lights to become a tradition.

1886 1st national accountants’ society in US formed

On December 22, 1886, the formation of the first national accountants’ society took place. The NSA is a professional association for tax and accounting professionals in the US. Moreover, it provides services such as accounting, tax, auditing, financial and estate planning, and management services to 19 million individuals and businesses. Initially, the society was a non-profit cooperation in 1945 and represented it’s clients before the US Treasury Department. Additionally, the NSA offers educational programmes and events such as continuing professional education (CPE) online. Also, on-demand webinars and training seminars for tax and accounting professionals exist.

2010 Barack Obama ends “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy .

US President Barack Obama signs a law officially revoking the 17-year-old policy known as “Don’t ask, don’t tell”. The new law permits homosexuals to serve openly in the US military. Additionally, the don’t ask, don’t tell implemented as a compromise measure in the 1990s. The 17-year-old policy was a ban on homosexuals, gay and lesbians to openly serve in the military. The policy made no discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the military. The democratic leaders tried ending the policy along with an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill in the initial days.
