All You Need To Know About Employer Drug Testing

Have you ever heard of drug testing?

Drug testing is a way to recognize if employees are into substances. It can point to evidence of recent alcohol use, prescription drugs, and any type of substance. Currently, drug testing does not assess disability or whether a person’s behavior is influenced by the drug. Depending on the company policy, employers may do this prior to recruitment or even after that on a regular basis. Employees may be tested for drugs or alcohol at work, where permitted by national law. Sometimes drug testing is part of the recruitment process. This is pre-employment drug testing. Hiring is subject to passing a drug and alcohol test before employment. There are a variety of employer drug and alcohol tests.

What is Drug Testing?

Employers use employee drug testing as the most common form to make proper hiring decisions. Ensuring that the applicant is suitable for the position, will also ensure that the company is in safe hands. Employers are able to ensure the safety of the company. It restricts the employees from adverse and potentially harmful side effects of the drug user in the workplace. According to a recent study from Current Consulting, the cost of harassment in a safety-sensitive industry is much higher than in other industries. Their study puts a cost of $ 50,000 on employers for drug abuse of employees.

What is Pre-employment Drug Testing?

The test is mostly at a local health care facility. Urine testing is the most common type of drug test.

Types of pre-employment drug testing:

Urinalysis – A urine test is the most common way to get tested before hiring. The test usually takes place after employment submission. Urine tests can show traces of drug use even if the effects of the drug are not there. As this remains in the body for a long time. Urinalysis testing is the only government-approved test, by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Hair Tests – Hair tests have a long window to find the trace of the drug for up to 90 days. It will not see current use, only past, and does not track alcohol. For this test, experts collect a sample of 100 strands of hair. Also, the cut near the scalp is from the employee in an invisible place on the head.

Oral Fluids – Oral fluid testing is considered 100% authentic. Therefore, making it difficult for employees to cheat, mix, or make a test certificate. This test reduces the overall cost and time. Like traditional testing methods, the window for oral fluid testing is different for each drug. The worker should provide an oral sample with an inner swab of their mouth.

This is why drug testing workers often have to sign a waiver for their employer to get results. Some agencies administer the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which sets out the circumstances under which health information can be released. Lab testing facilities offer businesses the opportunity to purchase a variety of drug, alcohol, and nicotine testing products. Many states allow the use of quick test kits in some or all of the test situations. Please make sure your country allows quick testing before purchase.

Conclusion

You have worked hard to build your business, but you can lose everything from a single drug-related incident at work. Seeking a pre-employment drug test for all employees as per your written official policy can help you avoid such an incident from happening. The results of a drug test are personal health information. As a result, there may be restrictions on whether such information (and other information related to the employee’s history of alcohol or drug use) may be shared with others. Therefore, to have a better workplace experience, you can have get these tests done.
