Close your eyes and once again experience what you feel after you leave the theatre. The life evoking feeling you get when your eyes gradually adjust to the natural light, and your mind, being a little slower, takes its time to separate the images of film from the reality you are suddenly facing. To talk about your dreams is like talking about movies. Years can pass in a second, and you can hop from one place to another. It is a language of images. In the real cinema, every object and every light means something, as in dreams.
The whole of life is just like watching a film and to watch a movie that makes you believe in life is indeed a piece of art. Silver Linings Playbook, a petrified fountain of thought, is an art piece in itself. The year 2008 witnessed the publication of the novel, The Silver Linings Playbook, written by Matthew Quick. The novel was taken to the theatres in the year 2012. It is a remarkable piece of literature with an ever-gorgeous cinematic version. This life enunciating comedy-drama is written and directed by David O Russell. It has Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence along with Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker, Anupam Kher, and Julia Stiles in supporting roles.
Outwitted Direction
David O Russell presents a commendable visual style to the movie. After watching The Fighter and another one of his movies, his way of filming outstands the others’. He is capable of putting shots in a film that not only dramatizes but also seems more real than reality. He managed to have found the right tone for this movie and he wrote it. This is one of the best films available in the genre. The fans have witnessed his top-notch direction in other movies like The Fighter, American Hustle, Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees, and many more.
Did the actors really Act?
Bradley Cooper plays Patrick “Pat” Solitano and Jennifer Lawrence brings Tiffany Maxwell to life. Bradley who has given his Oscar-winning performances emerges as good as ever in the movie. The chemistry between Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper is among some of the best chemistry on-screen. The audience immediately connects themselves with Pat and Tiffany. There are times you see that the characters are so over-the-top strange and you begin to think that you cannot relate anymore. That is exactly when you feel a little more connected and reminiscence that sometime in your life you felt that way. This is one of those movies you watch and you forget that you are watching a movie.
The plot feels bona fide to life. There are moments in the film that make you forget that this is just a piece of fiction. The movie raises your expectation for it to not end and makes you want more and more.
The supporting actors too stole the show. Robert is amazing at what he does. People loved him for his work even when he had that string of not-so-great movies lately. However, he has never performed badly in any. Moreover, he delivered an Oscar-winning performance in the movie. It is extremely fulfilling to see Robert De Nero back in business because his fans were missing it. He plays the role of a father with OCD. He does justice to the role and flawlessly epitomizes the role of a supporting actor. The compulsive behavior and the overreaction lets you connect to a dad figure.
Break the Ice
The movie begins with Pat being discharged from a mental institution. So right off the bat, we know there is not something entirely right with this Pat guy played by Bradley Cooper. He goes and lives again with his parents Robert De Nero and his wife. His parents are evidently on edge. They are worried about what their son is capable of doing. The part Bradley plays is totally vulnerable. From saying whatever comes to his mind to sleeping and waking up with two contrasting mindsets. He is seen determined to win back his wife who left her owing to his mental dysfunctionality. Then, comes the plot twist when he runs into Jennifer Lawrence (Tiffany) who is yet another troubled woman. She offers to help him get along with his estranged wife in exchange for him being his dance partner for a competition.
Gradually, they develop feelings for one another in a much-unanticipated way. The bond between them is primarily based on them being weird yet outshines as the most beautiful connection on screen. The chemistry between the actors, fantastic dialogues, the interesting story, and the great direction makes this movie a must-watch.
Milestones Achieved
Silver Linings Playbook welcomed vast critical success. It also managed to receive a multitude of laurels and accolades. The movie witnessed an overall of eight nominations for the Academy Awards. The nominations were inclusive of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Academic Screenplay, and certain other categories. Moreover, it was the first film after 1981 to be oscar-nominated. Moreover, Lawrence won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Other known nominations were put forward by Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild, Independent Spirit Awards. This magical artwork was a huge success at the box office. It managed to make eleven times its budget. The movie grossed a total of over 236 million dollars worldwide.
It is a beautiful piece of art; it means something and makes you think. This artwork is funny and heartfelt at the same time. You get into these characters and the story. Above all, it makes you really care about the people portrayed on-screen.
Shoot at the Silver Lining
This is the most accurate, realistic, and relatable bipolar representation ever seen. The movie lets you acknowledge that little bit of crazy in you. Everyone in the movie has some sort of social aspect that is flawed. The movie kind of makes you feel that entire mankind is nothing but just a bunch of nuts trying to make their way in the world. Maybe some more idiosyncratic than the others, but ultimately we all raise that little freak in us. You witness yourself making excuses to justify these characters. There is no potential negative that the movie possesses. It gives you an insight into the world that is unforeseen yet right there in front of you.
Drama is life with the dull bits cut out. Silver Linings Playbook dramatizes every bit of emotion and trips you into a world beyond possibilities. It showcases varying emotional baggage with the characters owing to the ordeal they are put to. As per Tiffany, “Humanity is just nasty and there’s no silver lining.” To combat this are the words of Pat, “You have to do everything you can, you have to work your hardest, and if you do, you have a shot at a silver lining.” So dear readers shoot your shot at that silver lining, you never know what life unpacks for you.
