The day was formally proclaimed on November 16, 1995, marking the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. It was an initiative of UNESCO, which was ratified in the UN General Assembly via resolution 51/95. Later the UN invited UN member states to observe the International Day for Tolerance on November 16, 1996.
