This day marks the foundation day of the oldest insurance company. The company is Onderlinge van 1719. Moreover, it is located in Haarlem, Netherland. People initially called it “Begrafenisbos De Vrijwillige Liefdebeurs”. Its motto was “In Alles Ghetrou” which means “faithful in everything”. The word “Begrafenisbos” means funeral insurance. Since then there has been no turning back for the company.
1821: Opening of the New York Mercantile Library
On February 12, 1821, the New York Mercantile Library was established. Additionally, it is located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. In 2005 it became the Mercantile Library Centre for fiction. The people of New York call it the ‘Centre of Fiction’. Moreover, it is a non-profit organization. It became the fourth largest library in the country in the 1870s. Furthermore, it was also the largest lending library in the United States. Lastly, in 2018, the headquarters of the library moved to Downtown Brooklyn.
1855: Michigan State University established
Today, Michigan State University (MSU) is completing its 165 years of establishment. MSU was the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. It was a total of three buildings, five faculty members, and sixty-three male students. The university became co-ed in 1870 and is one of the most prestigious universities around the world. Did you know that before getting its present name in 1964, it went through six name changes. Today it offers more than 200 study programs. More than 50,000 students go to the university at present.
1909: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was formed
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP) was formed on February 12, 1909. It is a civil rights organization with its headquarters is in Baltimore. W.E.B. Du Bios, Moorfield Storey, and Mary White Ovington are the founding members of the NAACP. Its main purpose was to eliminate all kinds of racial discrimination and misconduct. It also ensured that all people get their social, political, educational, and economic rights equally. The NAACP has played an important role in ending segregation in the United States of America.
1947: “New Look” by Christian Dior.
Christian Dior founded the company in 1946. On February 12, he launched his first summer-spring collection called the “New Look”. The collection was a whole new outlook for women’s fashion. Through this collection Dior aimed to celebrate grandeur and ultra femininity. The dress which brought a revolution in the fashion industry had rounded shoulders, cinched waist, and a full A-line skirt. Initially, Dior named the collection as “Corolle” and “Huit”. But then he changed it when the editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar commented, ”It’s such a new look”.
2001: The first spacecraft landed on an asteroid
For the first time in human history, NEAR Shoemaker became the first spacecraft to touch an asteroid. The full form of NEAR is Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous. NASA launched IT on February 17, 1996. NEAR Shoemaker made the historic touchdown in the “saddle” region of 433 Eros. This was a historic day for space studies. February 12, created a moment never witnessed before.
