The cold war between the USA and the Soviet Union gave birth to conflicting oppositions in Afghanistan. The USA took the opportunity and began funding the Taliban to resist the interim government in Afghanistan to weaken the Soviets. When the Soviet-led government fell apart in Afghanistan, the USA-funded Taliban rose to power with its rigid and extreme Islamic norms. The Taliban aims to establish stringent Sharia law in the country, which will comply with the radical rules of the Islamic culture. However, there was a global backlash against the Taliban after they took an active part in the 9/11 bombing in the USA. Furious, the USA organized a military mission that ended in the eradication of the Taliban from Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2011. However, it is now that we see the Taliban rise to power again, and it is as scary as it can get.
What does the Taliban mean for Afghanistan?
When the Taliban was in power in Afghanistan between 1996 to 2001, the state witnessed immense poverty and suffering. The Taliban banned ordinary things like the internet, painting, music, dancing, and education for girls. Since the main aim of the Taliban soldiers was to enforce radical Sharia and Islamic beliefs, Afghanistan had little to no hope when their president fled the country. The people were hopeless. Ever since the Taliban took over, reports of mass killings and violence against men have been coming along, which are as devastating as they sound.
The Taliban bluntly stated that there would be no democratic government in Afghanistan but only the Taliban government, which means active Sharia rule. The future of Afghanistan is bleak now that the Taliban is in power. The other countries have left Afghanistan in total isolation, which makes the people even more despondent. The United Nations has yet to make a statement on the current events in the history of Afghanistan.
Suppression on women and their rights
It is no surprise that strict Islam undermines women. The Taliban is nowhere behind. In the previous ruling years of the Taliban, women were confined to homes, not allowed to work. Society did not allow girls to participate in social gatherings, and the acceptance of the hijab was mandatory. Moreover, no woman could leave her house if a male relative was not accompanying her. Those were dark days in the history of Afghanistan. Before the rule of the Taliban, women were an integral part of society and had equal rights. They could wear what they wanted and leave their houses as and when desired. However, it was the doom of the Taliban that led things to take a devastating turn. Although the Taliban promises to uphold women and their rights, it is hard to believe it.
What is happening in Afghanistan now?
The Taliban have reinstated their government and promise to make substantial changes to their order. However, given how the few days of Taliban control have been, it is unlikely that the state would see any positive changes. Hours when the Afghan government fell, women posters were seen getting ripped off and covered in black paint. Girls in front of the school were given black hijabs because it is still mandatory to cover their bodies.
The people were scared for their lives since the government fell, which led them to escape the country. This led the airport to be in shambles. Videos of people falling off the airplane surfaced over the internet, and the netizens expressed morosely and aggression. Scared and confused, most countries came forward to evacuate their citizens from their respected embassy in Afghanistan.
What did the USA say?
The Taliban reinstatement goes back to when the USA started funding them to fight against the union. When the president of the USA was asked if he thinks the Taliban would be able to take power, he refused. Furthermore, he claimed that it would be months before the Taliban will be able to get into Kabul. Proving everything wrong, the Taliban is in, and the future of the Afghans seems a blur.
In a recent interview, after the Taliban took over, Joe Biden said that he stands by his decision of withdrawing its army from Afghanistan that has been there for almost two decades now. Additionally, he mentioned that the Afghan government fell because the people were not willing to fight their battle. He said that if the country did not want to protect itself and offer resistance, there is nothing that supporting nations could do.
The world does not need hate.
Hate is a strong word. And the world does not need it. The future of women in the country is rising at an all-time low. The most destructive part about the entire situation is how no government has come in support of Afghanistan. Netizens are expressing their views, but no country has said that the Taliban should withdraw. In the light of rather unfortunate incidents, China seems to be happy about the Taliban rule. They said that they are willing to initiate friendly relations with the Taliban government. There are no upsides to dominance. There are no upsides to suppressing the rights of people and ignoring the opinion and considerations of half the population of the earth. The future of Afghanistan is dark, and it is high time the countries took notice of the same.
