At the UN General Assembly, Joe Biden faces a dual challenge. That is, he must convince the planet that the U.S. is committed to multilateralism. While persuading the American public that the UN stands often as an important institution. On Tuesday, we spotted Joe Biden in his maiden address at the UNGA. He called on UN members to assemble to tackle several hurdles. Hurdles like global climate change and also the Covid-19 pandemic. He underlined his commitment to multilateralism. Moreover, he also pointed to the importance of the Quad grouping. This elevation will consider grouping with India, Australia, and Japan to summit level engagement. Adequately at the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
Contrasting Trump
Particularly, the US President remarked that the most consequential region was the Indo-Pacific in the world.
Even he defended the messy war in Afghanistan through his speech. He also said America was able to compete with China economically and ideologically. Regardless, he was not attempting to relaunch another dispute. Moreover, reaffirmed support for multilateral bodies like the United Nations and World Health Organization. These were attacked and abandoned by his predecessor, former US President Donald Trump. That was a strong statement by him as there already exists heat on this subject. Also, Joe Biden pointed up a topic in his UNGA speech that compared the First approach of America with Trump as he involved countries to figure together. He even cited the death and devastation brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, Biden called the subsequent 10 years a “decisive decade for our world” which will determine the worldwide community’s future, and declared the earth stands at an “inflection point in history.”
Broke the silence on Afghanistan
Biden did not mention the submarine issue. However, to end the war in Afghanistan so to defend his decision he stood by many remarks. He said, “We’ve ended 20 years of conflict in Afghanistan.” As the US President confronted many criticisms after pulling out international troops from Afghanistan. However, not only in this matter but Biden faced criticism even for allies and partners such as India. Moreover, the chaotic evacuation stood marked by the killing of 13 US troops and about 200 Afghan civilians. During that period, 10 people were killed in the US drone strike. They however turned out to be civilians. Moreover, it included seven children. Not the Islamic State-Khorasan operatives as the US had originally described them.
A tricky message for no disputes
Trump previously contributed his criticism and harsh words towards Nato and the EU. Again, Biden spoke for them. China was not named by Joe Biden. But, it shaped the stage for chunks of his speech. Moreover, argued that the globe faced a choice between people. This choice existed between those who promote western democratic values and authoritarian regimes.
Besides all of these, Joe Biden clarified that he is not seeking any conflict. As a section of that shift in attention, the President made his speech clear. That he is going to be looking to use American diplomatic and scientific skills. That will be over military power as crises appear around the globe.
Biden concentrated more on the Covid-19 pandemic that has alleged many lives around the globe. He glorified the US shipping quite 160 million Covid-19 doses. These were glorified by countries around the world. However, this makes putting quite $15 billion toward the worldwide Covid response. Moreover, he will announce additional Covid-19 obligations on Wednesday at the US-hosted global Covid-19 summit.
He emphasized the critical necessity to act to fight the climate crisis. Also, noted that his administration pledged to double the general public international financing. So that it can assist developing nations to tackle the climate crisis. Biden said he would work with Congress. Particularly to double that number again, which might “make the US the leader in public climate finance.” Moreover, he mentioned the attention to long-standing rules and norms.
A powerful speech?
Of course, any speech by the President of the superpower will indicate something significant. In this speech, the President tried to convey a tricky UN message. Besides, this tricky message was for the troubled world. Moreover, he addressed multiple current issues, he kind of wanted to solve the conflicts. Most importantly, he addressed the importance of working together with other countries along with multilateral bodies. Also Read: BTS at United Nations General Assembly 2021
