1809: Mary Kies, 1st woman to issue a US patent for weaving straw
Earlier to 1790, only men were allowed the right to patent. Then, the Patent Act of 1790 gives the right to everyone, men and women, to protect his or her inventions with a patent. Many states follow a pattern where women did not bother to patent their inventions. However, Mary Kies broke this patter on May 5, 1809. She patents her method of weaving straw with silk and became the first woman to receive a U.S. patent.
1905: The first issue of the newspaper ‘Chicago Defender’ published
Robert S. Abbott founded the ‘Chicago Defender’ on May 5, 1905. By the advent of World War I, this newspaper became the most influential black weekly newspaper. The first issue was filled with the local news items, which were gathered by the clippings from other newspapers, and Abbott himself. It came with four pages, and six-column handbills.
1956: First World Championships of Judo held
The International Judo Federation (IJF) organized the first ‘World Judo Championships’ on May 5, 1956, in Tokyo, Japan. It is the highest level of competition of Judo. A total of 55 matches has held from 1956, till 2018, with Japan as the most winning country. It takes place every year and different countries participate in this competition.
1961: Alan Shepard became the first American to travel in space
When the Freedom 7 spacecraft blasted off, Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. was launched into space as a Navy Commander, and he became the first American astronaut to travel into space.
2015: Scientists announce the discovery of EGS-zs8-1
EGS-zs8-1 is a high-redshift Lyman-break galaxy of size 15 ky (diameter). Found at the northern constellation of Bootes on May 5, 2015, announced by Pascal Oesch and his colleagues announced the discovery. This also adds up to the history of May 5.
