Today- February 3

Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”Every person has some problems going on in their life. However, being with family and having someone who helps you get through a tough time makes the situation better. Some people mourn the loss of their loved ones. At the same time, some others have to go against them to achieve their dreams. However, both situations get better over time. On February 3, one can observe National Missing Persons Day. Also, Women’s Physician Day is celebrated.

National Missing Persons Day

National Missing Persons Day is observed on February 3. This day is marked to acknowledge the absence of people who disappeared from one’s life. As absurd and horrifying it may sound, at times, people who are close to us can vanish out of the blue without any reason. If you are fortunate enough, you may meet them again. However, what about those families who are never able to meet their loved ones again? A missing person can be anyone, be it a female, male, or a child! The loss and void because of the disappearance are painstaking and hard on people. This day gives hope and courage to such families to look for their kin. Additionally, it disseminates the information of such people amongst the communes.

History

In 2010, Jo-Ann Lowitzer’s daughter, Alexandria, went missing. Henceforth, he started this day so that information keeps spreading and he might meet his daughter. The awareness of the details of a missing person increases the chances of finding that person. Anguish and distress due to the missing family member are hard. In such a time, a person needs someone who can console them and give hope.

Why do we celebrate?

The day can be observed as a painful one. One gets nostalgic of the memories and emptiness due to the loss of that person. Moreover, the person feels more distressed by the fact that reason remains unknown. However, everyone can share information and pictures of the people who have been reported missing. After that, they can alert their families and spread awareness regarding the same. One can visit certain webpages or institutions to acquire the details and help the families in despair.

Women Physician Day

Women Physician Day observed on February 3 celebrates the courage and success of female physicians. It honors those who have shattered the shackles of stereotypes associated with women and have become physicians. Additionally, it also celebrates the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell. She was the first black woman to go against prejudice and received her medical degree. Blackwell was out of the United Stated and henceforth, started a movement to gain support for female physicians. Her initiative gained momentum which eventually provided equality of opportunity to women in the field of medicine.

History

The two organizations Physicians Moms Group and Medelita commenced the celebration of Women Physician Day. The day was first observed on February 3, 2016. The day highlights the role of female health care staff and team in the medical industry. Many women in history such as Marie Curie, Maria Montessori, Rosalind Elsie Franklin, Virginia Apgar, and many more who have contributed to the field of medicine are remembered on this day.

Why do we celebrate?

First things first, appreciate and thank your physician. Post about the day and how it is significant to you. Do not forget to remind your family members of the same! You can visit the nearest community center with your fellow friends. After that, you all can express gratitude to the health care workers. Make this day special for every female health care worker who had to overcome the obstacles. Make them realize how fulfilling their journey has been as they worked hard to become a physician in a society where women are always held back for following their dreams.
