1865 – Mary Edwards Walker, awarded Medal of Honor

Dr. Mary Edwards Walker have led pretty eccentric life, ever since her childhood days. She wore men’s trousers and collared shirts, defying all the societal norms about females. She made her way in the nation’s first medical college, that is, Syracuse Medical College. At the surge of the American Civil War, she earned a spot as an acting surgeon in the US Army. After the war ended, a bill had signed by President Andrew Johnson. Therefore, awarding her the Medal of Honor for Meritorious Service on November 11, 1865. she became the first and only US female surgeon to receive the Medal of Honor, till date.

1925 – Robert A. Millikan announces discovery of cosmic rays

Robert Andrews Millikan is a Nobel Prize winner, American physicist. He was born on March 22, 1868, and died at the age of seventy-five. His study about the elementary electronic charge and the photoelectronic effect, won him the Nobel Prize in 1923. He did his graduation from Oberlin college (Ohio) and completed his Ph.D. at Columbia University.  After that, he became a professor in the University of Chicago after serving as an assistant, in 1910. However, he left the University to become the director at the Norman Bridge Laboratory of Physics at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. There he discovered the the Cosmic Rays, which he announced on November 11, 1925.

 

1930 – Albert Einstein and Leó Szilárd is awarded patent number for the invention of Einstein Refrigerator

An absorption refrigerator having no moving parts, that work at constant pressure and by heat source. Einstein and one of his former student Leó Szilárd came together and Invented the Absorption Refrigerator. However later became famous by the name of Einstein refrigerator. Most importantly, the refrigerator worked with three major fluids – water, ammonia and butane. Therefore, on November 11, 1930, Einstein and Szilárd had the refrigerator patented under both of their name in the US. Among all the Patents that Einstein holds, this is the most beautiful.

1968 – Maldives becomes a Republic

Republic of Maldives lies in South Asia, in Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean. The most populated city and the capital of Maldives id Malé. As for many years, royal dynasties ruled Maldives, Malé is also known as the “king’s Island”. It became the member of commonwealth In 1982. In 1967, out of forty-four members of the parliament, voted in favor of the republic. Thus, ending the 853-year-old monarchy. Therefore, on November 11, 1968, the island of Maldives became republic for the second time. Hence, the presidency of  Ibrahim Nasir replaced the constitutional monarchy with republic.

1987 – Van Gogh’s “Irises” sold at a record price of $53.9 million

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch artist. He worked in post-impressionism. He had painted numerous paintings during his lifetime. All of them came under the light after decades of his death. Vincent Van Gogh painted the “Irises” in the year 1889. After almost half a century since he painted that painting, it was sold at a record price of $53.9 million, on November 11, 1987. Therefore, making it the highest price ever paid for a painting.
