June 10 – Equal Pay Act and more

1805: The First Barbary War came to an end.

Wearied by the blockade and raids, and now under threat of a continued advance on Tripoli proper and a scheme to restore his deposed older brother Hamet Karamanli as ruler, Yusuf Karamanli signed a treaty ending hostilities on 10 June 1805.

1854: The first graduation of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland

Earlier the course was prescribed for two years, the first and last being at school and the other three being served at the sea. The course was made for consecutive four years in 1851 and the first batch of graduates came out on 10 June 1854.

1909: The first SOS signal was transmitted

The Cunard liner RMS Slavonia transmitted the first distress emergency SOS call while sailing the Azores. And a steamer SS Arapahoe on 11 August 1909. SOS is a Morse code distress signal that was established for maritime use.

1916: Great Arab Revolt began against ruling Ottoman Turks

The great Arab revolt was officially initiated on 10 June, 1916. It was a military uprising of the Arab forces against the Ottoman Empire. The aim of the revolt was to create a single and unified Arab state. On this day, Hussein ordered his supporters to attack the Ottomans.

1925: Tennessee adopted a new biology textbook denying the theory of evolution

Butler law was passed by the Tennessee legislature. The law prohibited the teaching of Darwin’s theory of evolution. Thus a new book was created and adopted to be taught to scholars. The southern counterparts of the state followed suit. The trial of the book began one month later on July 10th,1925.

1943: The Allies began bombing Germany around the clock

The Allies’ victory over the submarine led to around the clock bombing in the German territories.  The British Bomber Command and the U. S. Eighth Air Force had begun round the clock bombing, the British by night, and the Americans by day.

1963: US Equal Pay Act signed into law by President John F. Kennedy

The equal pay law was one of the first legislative steps taken to address and propagate anti-discrimination across the state. The Act focused on wages and addressed the discrimination by employers in paying all their employees. The act found paying men and women different compensation for the same amount of work an offense.

1977: Apple Computer shipped its first Apple II computers

Apple launched sales for its Apple II series in 1977. The new launch had a MOS technology 6502 microprocessor,  an audio cassette interface, and the Integer BASIC programming language built into the ROMs.

2003: The Spirit Rover was launched, beginning NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover mission

Spirit was also known as MER-A was active from the years 2004 to 2010. It was one of the two rovers of NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers mission that landed successfully on Mars three weeks before its twin.  On May 1, 2009, the rover got stuck on soft sand. After trying for some more months, on 26 January 2010, NASA announced it was unrecoverable.
