Each day in the past people have created history and have reached new milestones, that opened new roads for the world population. Here we through this column bring to you the historical milestones of today.
1850: Gold is discovered in the Rogue River in Oregon, extending the quest for gold up the Pacific coast.
Gold was first spotted by an American carpenter originally from New Jersey. He found flakes of gold in the American River at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. Later, gold was discovered in Josephine Creek, on the Illinois River and the creeks near Jacksonville, Oregon.
1868: The U.S. Congress formed the Wyoming Territory.
The Wyoming Territory was incorporated into the United States as its own territory on 25 July. Later on in 1890 it was admitted into the Union as the State of Wyoming. President Andrew Johnson signed the Wyoming Organic Act on this day and the territorial government was organized on April 17, 1869. Land was carved out from portions of Dakota, Idaho,and Utah territories.
1952: Puerto Rico attained its own government as a commonwealth of the United States.
Following the Spanish – American War, Puerto Rico became a US territory in 1898. In the year 1952, the residents of Puerto Rico adopted a new constitution establishing itself as a commonwealth of the United States. Puerto Ricans island still cannot vote in presidential elections.
1978: Louise Brown, the first human conceived using in vitro fertilization, was born in England.
Louise Brown is the world’s first ‘test-tube baby’ born through the IVF (in vitro fertilization) procedure born to parents Lesley and Peter Brown. The baby was born at Oldham and District General Hospital in Manchester, England.
IVF was not a hugely accepted process then, and was debatable. Since Louise’s birth, over 1 million children have been born using this procedure. The then experimental IVF proved to be successful, with the birth of Louise Brown.
1984: Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Yevgenyevna Savitskaya became the first woman to walk in space.
The first woman to walk in space, Svetlana Yevgebyevna was born in Moscow, Russia. Svetlana was interested in aviation from a very young age. She claimed the top spot at the World Aerobatic Championships. She was the second woman to enter outer space and the first woman to perform a space walk. She served as the deputy chairperson for Duma’s defense committee and won re-election to her seat.
2007: Indian lawyer and politician Pratibha Patil was sworn in as president of India, becoming the first woman to hold the office.
Pratibha Patil, a member of the Indian National Congress, served as the 12th President of India from 2007 to 2012. She was the first and the only woman to have been the President of the Indian subcontinent, as of today. Pratibha Patil succeeded Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Patil also served as the governor of Rajasthan, India from 2004 to 2007.
