1830: Charles X of France abdicated the throne, unable to resist the July Revolution.

The July revolution led to the creation of a constitutional monarchy. On the very next day, on 2 August Charles X and his son Dauphin abdicated their rights. They left the subcontinent and left for France. The July revolution was the inspiration behind many revolutions that took place around France in the next few years.

1876: Colorado was admitted to the union, becoming the 38th U.S. state.

President Ulysses Grant signed the proclamation this day that led to Colorado becoming an official part of the US. The act changed the course of history for the people living in the state as they had elected Democrat Thomas Patterson as their territorial delegate to Congress in 1874.

1940: John F. Kennedy’s Why England Slept, a critical account of the British military that became a bestseller, was published.

Why England Slept is a thesis written by former president John F. Kennedy in his college years in Harvard. The book discusses the failures of the British government that ultimately led to the second World War. And also illustrates the government’s delay in acting against Adolf Hitler.

1944: The final entry was recorded in the diary of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who spent two years in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

The diary of a young girl, written by Anne Frank ends abruptly on August 1, 1944. After which she and her family were found by the Nazi from their hideout. Anne Frank’s diary was published by her father who was the only person in their family who could return alive. He published the diary as a tribute and memory of his daughter.  The Diary of A Young Girl is an all time best seller.

1981: The cable television network MTV debuted 

Music Television, made its debut on the midnight of August 1, 1981. It became a 24 hour source of entertainment through music videos for everyone around the world. The broadcast of the music video for Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles was the first video to be streamed.

1996:  American author George R.R. Martin published A Game of Thrones, the first installment in his hugely popular fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire.

The first volume of the novelas A Game Of Thrones, a part of George Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, was published in 1996. It took him 5 years to get published, from the day he started working on the novel. Later Game of Thrones was adapted into a television series consisting of 8 seasons.
