Discoveries, Inventions and Milestones achieved throughout the centuries that has made our life as we know it. Here are some of the discoveries and inventions that has made our life easier that happened on November 25, over the centuries.
1715- First English patent granted to an American, for processing corn
Sybilla Righton Masters was born in Bermuda in 1676. She became the first known Caucasian female to have received an English patent. Also, she had possibly the first female machinery inventor in America. She left for England in 1712 to pursue patents for her ideas. Therefore on November 25, 1715, she received the English patent for the process of cleaning and curing of the India corn. But however, she received the patent for the corn mill under her husband’s name. As women were not allowed to have patent under their own names. Later she also invented a machine to weave straw and palmetto leaves into hats and bonnets. She received the patent for the same under her husband’s name.
1884- John B Meyenberg patents evaporated milk
The Swiss-born American, John Baptist Meyenberg was born in 1847. He worked in the condensed milk factory. Since the refrigerators were not invented in the mid nineteenth century, John experimented on the preservation of the milk, without sugar. He experimented it all through 1866 to 1883, until one day he finally discovered it. The condensed milk would last longer, without added sugar, if heated to 120 degree Celsius and stored in a sealed container. Therefore, on November 25, 1884, he received the patent for the evaporated milk.
1897- Spain grants Puerto Rico autonomy
A variety of groups and organizations fought for the independence of Puerto Rico. After suffering from centuries, Spain granted the rights of Spanish citizenship to all the males over twenty-five years, to the the Cubans and Puerto Ricans. However, on November 25,1897, Spain granted Puerto Rico, the right of self government, also know as Carta Autonomica. Under this new arrangements, the first elections were held on March 1898.
1920- First Thanksgiving Parade in Philadelphia
The Gimbels Departmental Store sponsored the first parade of Thanksgiving Day on November 25, 1920. The Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade had balloons, floats, marching bands and celebrities. Ellis Gimbels founded the Gimbels Departmental Store. Therefore, he waned to make the toy land of the store, a destination for holiday shoppers. Moreover, he had more than fifty employees, dressed in the costumes, ready to walk down the parade. This parade did not stop despite the World War I going on.
1968- “Hatey Bazarey” wins the Golden Lotus in National Film Award
The National Film Awards felicitates the best work done in India cinema. However, organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the President presents this award to the winners. For the Fifteenth National Film Award, the award for best feature film went to “Hatey Bazarey”, a Bengali feature film. The event took place at the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, India, on November 25, 1968. The president of India, Zakir Khan, presented the awards to the winners.
