1903: Wright brothers make the first successful flight
On December 17, 1903, the biggest milestone in the history, achieved by the Wright brothers as they flew their first flight. Orville and Wilbur Wright, had invented, built as well as flew the first ever motor airplane. Therefore, the flight took place at six kilometer south of the Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. They obtained the inspiration and interest in flying from the toy helicopter, gifted to them by their father. Later, they went on to make various changes in their aircraft, that made the airplane as we see it today.
1938: Discovery of nuclear fission using uranium
A nuclear reaction or the process of radioactive decay in which an atom’s nucleus split in two or more smaller nuclei, is known as nuclear fission. Chemist Otto Hahn and his assistant Fritz Strassmann discovered this process On December 17, 1938. This discovery became of utmost importance as it possibly led to the development of nuclear weapons and power. Therefore, in 1944, Hahn received Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this discovery.

1948: The Smithsonian Institution displays the Wright brothers’ plane
The invention of aircraft by the wright brothers refashioned our existence. However the world drastically changed after that cold December morning when their first flight took place. Orville Wright gave the aircraft on loan to London Science Museum in 1928, where it stayed for twenty years. Then on December 17, 1948, the Smithsonian institution accepted the flyer and had it installed there.
1989: The Simpsons, an animated series, makes its US debut
The animated series of a dysfunctional nuclear family that sprang into life on April 19, 1987. It began appearing a s a bumper in the commercial breaks between The Tracy Ullman Show. A record-breaking of thirty one seasons and six hundred and forty-eight episodes have been made yet. Therefore it debuted in America as a Christmas special on December 17,1989. It went on to become the first animated series to win most number of Emmy awards. It reflects the modern American family very well.

2012: NASA successfully completes the mission to map the Moon’s gravity field
To provide the most accurate gravitational map of the Moon, NASA designed a mission called GRAIL- The Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory. Moreover, along with gravitational map, it provided with topographic data, moon’s internal structure, composition and evolution. Hence, the twin spacecraft of NASA’s GRAIL mission completed their final round and impacted the moon on December 17,2012.
