Today – May 12

Every day is beautiful, and every day is worth celebrating. If you are looking for special reasons to do so, we have got you. We bring to you the different reasons we should be celebrating each day, and on May 12 we celebrate National Limerick Day and more. Read on!

National Limerick Day

What is a limerick? It is a humorous five-line poem with a rhyme scheme a-a-b-b-a, in which the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme, while the third and fourth lines are shorter and share a different rhyme. It is usually humorous and frequently rude. Its subject is usually a short, pithy tale or description. Limericks derive their name from the Irish city of Limerick. Although Edward Lear did not create Limericks. However, it was he who popularized them, bringing the love of limericks to the masses. Limericks are as old as far as 500 years.

It is Limericks Day on May 12

Limerick Day celebrates the birthday of famous English artist, much-loved author, illustrator, and poet, Edward Lear, born on May 12, 1812, and bade goodbye on January 29th, 1888. He made a significant contribution to the art world. Among other areas of art, he was also known for his prose and poetry. Limerick Day celebrated limerick poems, popularized by Edward’s famous book of poems named ‘Book of Nonsense’, published in 1846, at the age of 34.

How To Celebrate

This day is about appreciating beautifully written English poetry from one of the world’s most notable poets. It is also about bringing a little ‘silliness’ and fun into your life through the written word. This day offers the ideal opportunity to bring a little literary humor to your life through the art of limerick writing. A fantastic way to mark this incredible day, dedicated to Edward Lear and his incredible works, is to sit down and write a few humorous limericks of your own. On this day, many people choose to buy a copy of ‘A Book of Nonsense.’ This year spend Limerick Day getting creative, making up your own full limericks that reflect your life and experiences. You can also plan a trip to Limerick, Ireland.

Nutty Fudge Day

On May 12, every year, National Nutty Fudge Day tempts us to indulge in smooth chocolate fudge filled with crunchy nuts. There is a story behind it. In 1886, a letter was found written by Emelyn Battersby Hartridge. He was a Vassar College student in Poughkeepsie, NY about her Baltimore, MD cousin. It referred to fudge her cousin had made and sold for 40 cents per pound. Hartridge obtained the recipe, and in 1888, she made 30 pounds of fudge for the Vassar College Senior Auction.

Late in the 19th century, some shops on Mackinac Island, Michigan, began to produce similar products as the Vassar College fudge and sold it to summer vacationers. Other stories consist of the invention of fudge being an accident. The story goes there was a college lecture in Virginia attempting to teach students about creating toffee, but instead, it resulted in fudge.  You can still spot fudge in some of the original shops there today.

To celebrate this day, make a nutty sweet fudge to eat and share. Fudge is a beloved treat, whether it is chocolate, vanilla, or a more exotic flavor. On days whether you have nothing to do, this is your opportunity to try your hand at a tasty treat that you will be sure to not regret. So just try making fudge with a simple recipe. Do you know about the largest fudge ever made? It was in Ontario, Canada, coming in at exactly 5,760 pounds of over 2 tons. It took over a week to construct and used over 300 gallons of condensed milk.

Fibromyalgia Awareness Day

First, let us read something about Fibromyalgia. It is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals. Medication, talk therapy, and stress reduction may help in controlling the symptoms.

The first National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day was on May 12, 1992. It was in honor of the birthday of Florence Nightingale. However, historical documentation suggests Nightingale may have suffered from symptoms similar to fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.

Fibromyalgia is a difficult disease to diagnose. As there are no specific set of tests to diagnose it. Often, doctors are in difficult situations due to this. Therefore, we commemorate today to spread awareness about this day. And help people to know more about it. People organize several events like a charity run, awareness campaigns, and bake sales today.
