NATIONAL SIMPLICITY DAY

“Let’s keep it simple”

This holiday is designated in honor of the birthday of Henry David Thoreau, who was born that day in 1817. He is said to be a jack-of-all-trades. He was an author, a poet, an abolitionist, an environmentalist. He is often remembered for his transcendentalism. He and his contemporary transcendentalists believed that people have knowledge about themselves that “transcends” all the external forces in their lives. They advocated for living a simpler life to better get in touch with those feelings.

Thoreau himself said: “As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.” Today, sit and evaluate your life and find out what elements of your life are the most important ones.

Live this day simply. Unplug from your devices and try self-analysis. See what you’ve been doing and what should you do. Try to make things simple. Not only your activities, use this day to clear the clutter of your place as well. Try to remove the unwanted things from your place and create more space. This will definitely make you feel more comfortable.

PAPER BAG DAY

“One of the most significant environmental innovation of all times”

Making a substitute for polythene bags, delaying an upcoming crisis, July 12 is designated to celebrate a special day for paper bags. Millions of paper bags are used every day. Today, we celebrate the significance of the readily recyclable paper bags which have been around for years. Francis Wolle, an American inventor is known for his first paper bag machine in 1852. Another person to remember is Margaret E. Knight, who is known as the ‘mother of the grocery bag’ after she designed the square, flat bottomed bag, and the machine that would fold and paste them in 1870.

Paper bags are not only used for carrying groceries, lunches, or gifts, they can be used in many surprising ways. They can be used to serve popcorns when serving in a large quantity to prevent a mess. They can also be decorated to use as gift bags. Paper bags can be recycled into puppets, masks, and other crafty stuff for kids and craft-lovers. You can also use a paper bag to ripen fruit. Just wrap it in a paper bag for some time, and it’s ready to eat.

Celebrate this day by looking for more lesser-known uses of paper bags. Go for some activities with paper bags and spread awareness about them.
